Volkswagen Sub-compact SUV Under Consideration? | V3Cars

Since Skoda took charge of Volkswagen India under their India 2.0 project, VW have launched the Taigun compact SUV based on the MQB A0-IN platform. The German carmaker is now readying themselves to launch the Virtus mid-sized sedan in May 2022. Now, reports suggest Volkswagen India are likely to maintain this momentum by launching a sub-compact SUV based on the versatile MQB A0-IN platform.

With most car buyers preferring an SUV over a hatchback or sedan, there’s no better time than now for VW to enter the highly competitive sub-compact SUV segment. However, we believe Skoda would be the first brand from VW Group to launch a sub-compact SUV in India.

Needless to say, both Skoda and Volkswagen sub-compact SUVs will share their engines, transmissions and platform. However, both will offer a different design along with redesigned interiors. The 1.0L turbo petrol engine will help Skoda and Volkswagen to take advantage of tax benefits afforded to sub-compact SUVs. The low-cost MQB-A0 IN platform is likely to serve the needs of the segment well, thanks to its high localisation and modular nature.

When launched, the Skoda and Volkswagen sub-compact SUVs will face still competition in the market. They will have to take on popular names like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, and the Mahindra XUV300. However, we expect the Skoda and Volkswagen sub-compact SUVs to hit the market after 2023.
