    Nissan Kicks 2020 variants explained

What Is The Price Of 2020 Nissan Kicks?

The new Nissan Kicks costs between Rs. 9.5 lakh and Rs. 14.15 lakh. It’s available with a 1.5-litre normal and a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine. The normal petrol engine is available in XL and XV variants. The turbo petrol engine is available in the XV, XV Premium and XV Premium (O) variants. The Kicks turbo with a manual transmission costs Rs. 1.85 lakh more than the normal petrol engine. This engine with a CVT automatic transmission is available in XV and XV Premium variants and costs about Rs. 1.5 lakh more than the comparable MT variant. Unfortunately, the top variant is not available with the automatic transmission. The premium Nissan is charging for the turbo petrol engine over the non-turbo engine and that of the automatic transmission is higher than usual.

Is The XV 1.3L Turbo Variant Of 2020 Nissan Kicks Worth Buying?

The XV variant of the Kicks is also available with a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine options. With the manual transmission, it costs Rs. 11.85 lakh - Rs. 1.85 lakh more than the XV 1.5. Not all of that sum goes towards the mechanical upgrades. Besides more power, torque and 6-speed manual transmission and an optional CVT automatic, The XV 1.3L automatic costs Rs. 13.45 lakh, which is another Rs. 1.6 lakh more than the XV turbo manual. The notable additions for the XV turbo are:

    • ESP
    • Traction control
    • Auto-start stop
    • Remote engine start
    • Push-button start/stop and keyless entry (Automatic only)
    • Remote engine start (Automatic only)

The XV turbo variant doesn’t add enough extra features or enough performance to justify the premium over the XV 1.5L variant. It’s not a value for money upgrade over the XV 1.5L. The XV turbo automatic offers an even weaker value proposition as the price jump of Rs. 1.6 lakh is more than usual for its segment.

Is The XV Premium 1.3L Turbo Variant Of 2020 Nissan Kicks Worth Buying?

The XV Premium turbo costs Rs. 12.65 lakh with the manual and Rs. 14.15 lakh with the automatic transmission. This XV Premium is Rs. 80,000 and Rs. 70,000 more expensive the XV variant’s manual and automatic transmission flavours, respectively.

For this reasonable price hike over the overpriced XV turbo variants, you get the following features:

    • LED projector headlamps
    • Hill-start assist
    • Remote engine start (for MT also)
    • Push-button start/stop with keyless entry (for MT also)
    • Electrically-foldable outside mirrors
    • Cruise control

While these features somewhat justify the premium over the XV variant, they can’t justify this premium over the XV 1.5L. Just like the XV turbo, the XV Premium turbo (with manual/automatic) is an expensive upgrade and not a good value for money.

Is The XV Premium (O) 1.3L Turbo Variant Of 2020 Nissan Kicks Worth Buying?

The XV Premium (O) turbo variant of the Nissan Kicks 2020 is available only with a manual transmission. It costs Rs. 13.7 lakh for the monotone paint job and Rs. 13.9 lakh with a dual-tone option. With the monotone colour option, it’s Rs. 1.05 lakh more expensive than the XV Premium turbo MT. Notable additions in the XV Premium (O) variant’s feature list include:

    • Automatic headlamps
    • Automatic wipers
    • Front thorax airbags
    • 360-degree camera
    • Rear fog lamps
    • Leather seat covers and armrest
    • Black and brown interiors
    • Soft-touch dashboard

This is again an expensive upgrade over the XV Premium variant and no recommended as it offers poor value for money.

Which Variant Of the 2020 Nissan Kicks Is The Best Value For Money?

Let’s recap how the various 2020 Kicks options stack up starting with the 1.5-litre petrol engine option. The XV variant here is an easy pick not just for this powertrain option but in the entire Kicks lineup. It offers the best bang for the buck.

If you absolutely want the performance of a turbo petrol engine in the Kicks, then we’d suggest you get the XV turbo variant. The XV Premium and Premium (O) variants are expensive upgrades.

If you want the Kicks with the automatic transmission, then your options are limited to the turbo petrol engine only, which is an expensive upgrade over the 1.5L variant, to begin with. If you are after the performance, then consider the manual transmission as CVT is not known for offering good performance especially with torquey, turbocharged engines. Not to mention, the CVT automatic transmission option itself if priced quite high even for a C-segment SUV.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The 2020 Nissan Kicks Petrol?

Now, let’s take a look at the Kicks’ engine performance to see how it compares against other C-segment SUVs starting with the normal petrol engine. This engine makes 106PS of power - 9PS less than the Creta and Seltos twins. But they make their power about 900rpm higher in the rev range. Similarly, the torque output of the Korean SUVs is 2Nm better than the Kicks’ but it comes at 4500rpm. The Kicks’ 1.5L engine makes its peak torque at 4000rpm. Since their torque output is comparable, everyday drivability should be similar in all of these SUVs.

The 2020 Kicks turbo engine makes 50PS more power and 112Nm of extra torque over the 1.5-litre normal petrol engine. In typical turbocharged fashion, its torque peaks much sooner than the normal petrol engine’s - at 1600rpm vs 4000rpm.

Compared to the Seltos and Creta turbo, this engine makes 16PS more power and 12Nm of extra torque. It’s worth noting that the Kicks’ is not only making more power but it’s also making it 500rpm sooner. This indicates that the off-peak torque spread could be better in the Kicks turbo. Clearly, the Kicks turbo is a better performer than the Creta and Seltos’.

Its unofficial fuel efficiency figure of 16.3kmpl is on par with its rivals.
