What Are The Pros And Cons Of Tata Tigor Electric?

The pros or advantages of Tigor EV are:

  • Pride in driving an environmentally friendly, green number plate car, which is indigenously developed by an Indian car manufacturer
  • Amazing torque output at low RPMs and city speeds
  • Dirt cheap running cost of well under Rs. 1 per km compared to petrol cars costing around Rs. 7/km
  • Minimal maintenance required - no engine oil, transmission oil, fuel filter, air filter
  • 300km+ range per full charge
  • Fast charge capable and compatible with CCS2 type charger
  • Quieter driving experience
  • 1.6 lakh km or 8-year battery warranty
  • Unique but not outlandish exterior colour schemes

The Tata Tigor electric has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • Very high km-to-breakeven over the Tigor petrol AMT. You’ll have to drive it around 1 lakh km to recover the higher upfront cost.
  • Boot space is compromised - more than 100 litres less than Tigor petrol.
  • Not a highway-friendly car - EVs with single-speed transmission chew up the range rapidly at triple-digit speeds.
  • No front armrest.
  • New-gen technology could lead to glitches and poor ownership experience.
  • You can’t go on a spontaneous road trip. It’ll need meticulous planning.
  • Charging stations, especially fast ones, are still rare. Even on a fast charger, it’ll take a while to juice up, which can throw your plans off course.
  • 306km range is too optimistic. You should expect around 200-250km per charge depending on the driving style, traffic, weather, tyre pressure, alignment and occupant load.

What Is The Price Of 2021 Tata Tigor EV?

The new Tata Tigor EV starts at Rs. 11.99 lakh and tops out at Rs. 12.99 lakh. It’s available in 3 variants- XE, XM and XZ Plus. The XM variant of the Tigor EV is Rs. 5.7 lakh more expensive than the Tigor XMA petrol AMT. The XZ Plus is Rs. 5.17 lakh more expensive than the comparable Tigor petrol AMT variant. This is quite a high premium to pay for the convenience of driving an electric car.

Tata Tigor EV XE - Base Model Features & Review

The new Tata Tigor EV XE variant costs Rs. 11.99 lakh. Hill-start, auto AC, front power windows and height-adjustable driver seat are its notable features. However, it doesn’t get remote central locking, audio system w/ steering-mounted controls, rear power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, wheel covers, and body-coloured door handles and ORVMs. We expect these features from a Rs. 12 lakh car. So, we can’t recommend this variant of the Tigor electric.

For this additional sum, you get remote central locking, music system, rear power windows, and remote central locking. For these features, this sum is a bit more than justifiable. Moreover, it still misses steering-mounted controls, touchscreen infotainment, projector headlamps, power mirrors. Therefore, we can’t recommend buying the XM variant of the Tigor EV.

Which Variant Of The Tata Tigor EV Should You Buy?

The Tigor EV’s base, XE and mid-spec XM variants are too basic considering the ex-showroom price, and they also miss out on a lot of basic and must-have features. Therefore, we can’t recommend these variants to a Tigor electric buyer.

However, the XZ Plus covers the basics quite well and justifies the Rs. 1.0 lakh increment over the XE variant. So, it’s worth buying and also our top-recommended variant of the Tigor EV.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Tata Tigor Electric?

Compared to the Tigor petrol AMT, the Tigor EV has a much better torque output. Moreover, it pushes out most of this torque at very low RPMs making city driving not just easy but fun.

On the range and efficiency side, Tata claim that the Tigor EV can go 306km on a full charge. It’s too optimistic, and even with this range, it can’t compete with the Tigor petrol’s theoretical range of almost 700km. Moreover, the Tigor petrol can top-up in 5 minutes at a petrol pump, and these are available almost every 2-5km. Charging stations are still quite rare and therefore you’ll have to plan your road trip meticulously with the Tigor EV. Alternatively, you can rent a petrol or diesel car for your road trips and limit the EV’s usage strictly to city limits.

What Are The Dimensions Of The Tigor EV?

In terms of dimensions, the Tigor EV is about the same as the Tigor petrol. The only notable difference is in the boot space, ground clearance and wheel size. For better efficiency, the Tigor electric gets a set of smaller, 14-inch wheels. The revised suspension setting of the Tigor EV also gives it 2mm better ground clearance. But, the battery under the boot floor eats up a lot of room and leaves 316 litres of cargo volume compared to the 419L space in the Tigor petrol.
