The pros or advantages of 2023 Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder petrol are:

  • Only C-segment SUV with 4WD helps it completely justify the SUV tag
  • Toyota’s proven track record and 25 years of experience making hybrids means solid long-term reliability and limited probability of teething issues we, which we normally see with first-gen technology
  • A fairly long list of features for top-spec variant such as tyre pressure sensors, ventilated seats, rear disc brakes, wireless phone charger, panoramic sunroof, colour LCD instrument cluster, head-up display, telematics, LED projector headlamps, 360-degree camera, 6 airbags, ambient lighting and illuminated boot, glovebox and footwell

The 2023 Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder petrol has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • Missing features list includes power driver seat, ADAS and wireless Android Auto, Apple Carplay
  • No diesel or turbo petrol engine; no 6-speed manual transmission
  • Boot space with the hybrid powertrain is on par with B1-segment hatchbacks like Swift; even mild-hybrid powertrain has the lowest boot space for its class

This variant adds mostly good-to-have features. The feature list is also drastically different for hybrid and mild hybrid powertrains. The hybrid engine offers some unique features and a distinct interior theme while the mild hybrid also packs some unique features. This variant neither adds many must-have features nor does it offer a decent value for money. In fact, the S variant offers the lowest value for money among all variants regardless of the powertrain you choose.

Only mild-hybrid petrol-automatic buyers, who don’t want to stretch their budget should consider this variant.

New Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Petrol S vs G Variant - Feature Comparison

These prices are Rs. 2.06 - 2.45 lakh higher than the lower S variant. While the G petrol-automatic costs the same Rs. 1.20 lakh more than the petrol-manual, the hybrid-automatic costs Rs. 2.45 lakh over the petrol-automatic. In the S variant, this difference stands at Rs. 2.13 lakh. It’s worth noting that the hybrid powertrain in the G variant also gets some notable extra features over the petrol-automatic.

For hybrid automatic buyers, the G is an easy-to-recommend variant. It has some exclusive high-value features like head-up display, colour LCD instrument cluster and a panoramic sunroof. Because of these, the Hyryder hybrid automatic seems like a complete car and the variant worth buying for a well-rounded ownership experience. After the base E petrol-manual variant, the Hyryder G hybrid automatic offers the best value for money and it’s our top recommendation with this powertrain.

Similarly, for the CNG-manual buyers, the Hyryder G variant offers a decent value for money and is a suitable option for CNG buyers.

With the mild-hybrid engine, the G variant adds some more good-to-have as well as must-have features. Still, it misses out on some features like a sunroof, leather upholstery and 360-degree camera, which are available in the higher variants and will drastically improve the ownership experience. So, for mild-hybrid petrol-manual and petrol-automatic buyers, we’ll suggest buying the top V variant for a better value and ownership experience.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Petrol G vs V Variant - Feature Comparison

In addition to the 3 powertrain options, the top-spec V variant of the 2023 Toyota Hyryder V variant also adds the option of 4-wheel drive with the mild-hybrid petrol engine and manual transmission.

The V variant of the Hyryder with the 2WD petrol-manual powertrain costs Rs. 15.89 lakh, which is Rs. 1.55 lakh more than the lower variant. The 4WD petrol-manual powertrain adds Rs. 1.30 lakh to the ex-showroom price and costs Rs. 17.19 lakh (ex-showroom).

In the top variant, the petrol-automatic powertrain costs Rs. 17.09 lakh and maintains a consistent price gap of Rs. 1.55 lakh over the lower variant and Rs. 1.20 lakh over the V petrol-manual. The top variant’s hybrid-automatic powertrain costs Rs. 19.49 lakh, which is Rs. 1.50 lakh and Rs. 2.40 lakh pricier than the lower variant and V petrol-automatic, respectively.

Buyers who want their SUV to have most of the modern day features will find the top V variant satisfactory. We’ll suggest mild-hybrid manual and automatic buyers to buy the V variant instead of G. It also offers considerably better value for money than the G variant.

The hybrid Hyryder buyers can give the top variant a look for some of its good-to-have features. Otherwise, the G variant seems fairly well-loaded with a suitable balance of features and value money.

For buyers interested in the 4WD, the V variant is the only option. So, there’s not much choice for 4WD Hyryder buyers. Thankfully, the 4WD offers decent value for money and it also justifies its SUV badge with some off-road capabilities.

Which Variant Of The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Petrol Should You Buy?

Let’s start with the base mild hybrid petrol engine and manual transmission combination. The base E variant has a good number of must-have features and offers the best value for money. If you don’t want to stretch your budget any further or prioritise value, then the E variant is an easy choice. The S variant is seriously overpriced and doesn’t offer enough must-have features to overlook its poor value for money rank.

The G variant is also not a good option and worth skipping for the V variant, which adds some high-value features to somewhat justify the higher asking price.

For Urban Cruiser Hyryder 4WD buyers, there’s only one choice – the V variant with mild hybrid petrol engine and manual transmission. This isn’t just the only choice for Hyryder 4WD buyers, it’s one of the only 2 options for C-segment SUV buyers who want 4WD. It’s also a decent value option considering its features and capabilities.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Petrol?

If we compare the base petrol engine of the Toyota Hyryder with similar engines of other C-segment petrol SUVs, then we can notice that it’s one of the few cars with a 5-speed manual transmission. Creta, Seltos, Kushaq and Taigun offer a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Creta and Seltos also have the option of auto-clutch manual transmission in specific variants. These transmissions manage the clutch and make driving in stop-and-go traffic almost as convenient as an automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the Kushaq and Taigun’s 1.0L turbo petrol engines offer better bottom and mid-range torque to improve the city driving experience.

The other disadvantage of this Hyryder’s base petrol engine is its lowest power and torque output figures. Although, its mild hybrid tech will add some bottom-end torque, which the peak torque figures don't convey.

The mileage details of the Urban Cruise Hyryder demolish the competition and only the Maruti Nexa Grand Vitara can match it.

Speaking of fuel efficiency, the Hyryder hybrid offers a phenomenal figure of almost 28kmpl with its strong hybrid engine. While it doesn’t offer significantly better power or torque figures, the strong bottom-end torque from the electric motor gives it enough performance for a decent driving ownership in the city as well as on the highway.

With the CNG powertrain, the Hydyder and Grand Vitara are the only options in the C-SUV space. Since they both share the powertrain, their power and torque specifications as well as fuel efficiency figures are identical. According to the CNG fuel prices in Delhi and with official mileage figures, you can expect to spend about Rs. 3.0 for every kilometre you travel with the Hyryder.

In terms of dimensions, the 2023 Urban Cruiser Hyryder is on par with its rivals for the most part. It’s the longest car in the segment, narrowly beating the Grand Vitara. However, its 208mm ground clearance is on par with the Vitara and head and shoulders above the rest of the C-segment SUVs.

It’s also worth noting that the Hyryder and Grand Vitara are the only 2 cars in this segment offering 17-inch wheels as standard even with the base variant. The only notable drawback in the Hyryder’s dimensions is its 373-litre cargo space, which is the smallest in this segment and smaller than even some B2 segment SUVs. The boot space further shrinks down to B1-segment hatchback levels if you buy the hybrid powertrain. Even the Swift has a 268-litre boot volume.

Good information. Just a nit-pick, don't see comparision for Nexon or Safari in any table. Is that because this is a largely petrol comparison and Nexon/Safari don't fit in?

thanks for your question Tejaswi. You are right. only petrol cars are included. Moreover, Nexon is a smaller car and safari is a larger car. both don't fit in this segment. Refer to our segmentation table at the end of the article.

"you can also drive the Hyryder without using the engine fuel for short distances." Do you mean that the vehicle will not use petrol or diesel?
