The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is for buyers who want the style of a compact SUV without giving up the ease of use of a hatchback. It is based on the Baleno, but the design, seating experience and overall appeal are quite different. The Fronx is available with a 1.2L normal petrol engine, a 1.0L turbo petrol engine and a 1.2L CNG option. The Fronx’s biggest strengths are its exterior design, ride comfort, cabin comfort and fuel efficiency. However, it is not a proper SUV in the traditional sense. It looks SUV-inspired, but the driving position and cabin layout still feel closer to a hatchback.
The Fronx is one of the best-looking cars in Maruti Suzuki’s lineup. From the front, it looks like a mini-SUV, with an upright face, a large trapezoidal grille and a chunky silver element connecting the DRLs. The 3-element headlamps sit lower in the bumper, while the DRLs also double up as turn indicators.
From the side, the bulky cladding, roof rails, high-set bonnet and pronounced haunches give the Fronx a high-riding and muscular look. The coupe-like roofline adds some flair and keeps it from looking too boxy. Its 16-inch wheels with taller 195/60 R16 tyres also help, and the 190mm ground clearance gives it more than just an SUV-like stance.
The Fronx looks especially strong from the rear. The connected tail-lamps look sleek, while the tall bumper, large faux skid plate and vertical reflector housings add visual muscle.
Inside, the Fronx shares its dashboard with the Baleno. The brown upholstery helps it feel a bit different, but the overall design is still very familiar. The dashboard looks busy because of the mix of grey, gloss black and multiple design elements. A more distinct cabin would have helped the Fronx feel more special.
That said, the cabin is comfortable and ergonomic. The front seats are supportive, the driver seat gets height adjustment, and the steering column gets tilt and telescopic adjustment. So, finding a comfortable driving position is easy, even if the seating posture is more hatchback-like than SUV-like.
The Fronx gets useful features like a wireless charger, 360-degree parking camera, auto AC, cruise control, rear AC vents, 2 rear USB ports and wireless phone mirroring, depending on the variant. However, the 1.2L normal petrol variants miss several useful features, including cruise control, telescopic steering adjustment, keyless entry, rear AC vents and rear wiper.
Rear seat space is good for 2 adults. With the front seat set for a 5ft 8in driver, there is enough kneeroom and enough space to slide your feet under the front seat. Headroom is also better than the sloping roofline suggests. However, there is no rear armrest, and the rear bench is best used by 2 adults.
The Fronx gets a 308L boot, which is usable enough for daily needs. However, the tall bumper makes it harder to load heavier luggage. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats add some flexibility, though they do not fold flat.
The Fronx CNG is practical from a running-cost point of view, but the boot is heavily compromised because of the cylinder. Some owners add an aftermarket tray to create a more usable flat loading area, which shows the limitation of the standard CNG boot layout.
The Fronx offers 2 distinct personalities. The 1.0L turbo petrol is the more exciting option. With 100PS and 148Nm, it feels peppy and strong, especially once the turbo starts working around 2000rpm. If you enjoy driving, this is the engine to choose.
The turbo-petrol automatic uses a torque converter transmission. In regular driving, it upshifts early to keep the drive smooth. This means you feel some lag at low RPM, followed by a stronger burst of performance. The paddle shifters help you manage that character better. On the highway, the turbo Fronx feels planted and reassuring, and its steering and suspension give it a more grown-up feel than expected.
The 1.2L normal petrol engine is quieter and more relaxed. It suits buyers who want a simple city car. The 5-speed AMT adds convenience, but it is not as smooth as a torque converter or DCT. At lower speeds, it can feel jerky, and on the highway the engine feels more comfortable around 80kmph than at 100kmph.
Ride quality is one of the Fronx’s strengths. It has a soft and absorbent setup, but it still feels stable on the highway. Though it needs more steering correction on the highway, which can make long drives more tiring.
In V3Cars’ tests, the Fronx turbo-petrol automatic returned 12.80kmpl in the city and 20.74kmpl on the highway. The 1.2L petrol-AMT returned 11.95kmpl and 19.70kmpl, respectively. Both figures place the Fronx among the more efficient cars V3Cars has tested.
Buyers with high monthly running should consider the CNG-manual. Compared to the equivalent petrol-manual variant, the Fronx CNG costs Rs. 94,000 more. Based on Delhi fuel prices in June 2026, this extra cost can be recovered in about 53,000km of driving.
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx gets a lot right. It looks good, rides well, feels comfortable inside and offers a wide range of engine, fuel and transmission options. The turbo-petrol suits buyers who want a stylish and efficient crossover with some performance, while the 1.2L petrol and CNG options suit more budget-conscious users.
However, the Fronx is not perfect. The cabin feels too similar to the Baleno, some key features are missing in the 1.2L variants, and the CNG version sacrifices a lot of boot usability. It also does not offer the upright seating position some SUV buyers may expect.
Still, for buyers who want a stylish crossover with Maruti Suzuki’s wide service support, good fuel efficiency and easy city manners, the Fronx remains a strong option. Buyers who are not in a hurry should also note that a facelift has already been spotted testing.
