The Kia Carens has undergone the Global NCAP crash tests for the third time. While the Kia MPV scored a 3-star safety rating for adult and child occupant protection in the first time, the adult protection rating was downgraded to 0 stars while the child occupant protection rating was upgraded to 4 stars. While the structure of the Carens MPV was improved, the second test showed high neck values for the driver, resulting in zero stars for adult occupant protection. Global NCAP stated this prompted an immediate reaction from Kia India to improve the neck performance by improving the restraint systems.

The latest Global NCAP crash test results for the 2024 Carens are valid for MPVs with VIN number VIN MZBGD813LPN144400 onwards, or units produced since 11th December, 2023.
In the frontal impact test, the 2024 Carens offered good protection to the driver’s and passenger’s head. However, the protection offered to the driver’s neck was weak while the passenger’s neck received good protection. The driver’s and passenger’s knees showed marginal protection and vulnerable to impact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard. The driver’s tibias showed good and adequate protection and passenger’s tibias showed good protection.
The footwell area of the 2024 Carens did not show significant deformation but was found to be asymmetrical between driver’s and passenger’s side. The bodyshell was rated as unstable and not capable of withstanding further loadings.

In the side impact test, head, chest, abdomen and pelvis protection was good. However, the side pole impact was not performed as the 2024 Carens showed improvements but not the performance that Global NCAP expected, limiting the car to the 3-star performance.

For this reason, the side pole impact was not assessed. Child occupant protection showed improvements by implementing i-Size approval for CRS and offering standard 3 points belt in all seating positions.

One surprising outcome from the latest crash test was the improvement in child occupant protection in the 2024 Carens. The MPV had received a 3-star safety rating in the very first test in 2022 with a score of 30.99out of 49 points. In the second test, this score improved to 40.92, giving the Carens a 4-star child occupant rating. In the latest test, the Carens performed marginally better with a score of 41 points out of 49, giving it a 5-star child occupant safety rating.
The 2024 Carens offers standard safety features like 6 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, rear disc brakes, ISOFIX child seat anchors and 3-point seatbelts for all seats.
