Hyundai are developing a compact electric SUV, expected to be called the Ioniq 1. Here are 5 things to know about its positioning, battery options, features and expected debut.
The Ioniq 1 is expected to be smaller and more affordable than the Creta Electric. It will compete in the B2-segment electric SUV category alongside the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Kia Syros EV.
The test cars show an upright body, short overhangs, a largely flat roof and a near-vertical tailgate. We expect a footprint comparable to the Hyundai Venue and Kia Syros, with a wheelbase exceeding 2500mm. Ground clearance could be around 190mm.
Hyundai have conceived the SUV as an EV, while the Creta Electric is derived from a petrol/diesel model. Its relatively long wheelbase could help maximise passenger space within those compact dimensions. The tall roof and upright rear section should also benefit headroom and luggage space.
Hyundai reportedly plan to offer Standard Range and Long Range versions. A smaller battery could help keep entry prices down. A larger option would suit buyers who need more range between charges.
For reference, Hyundai’s global Inster EV offers 42kWh and 49kWh batteries. We expect a similar approach for the Ioniq 1.
We also expect DC fast charging, with a 10 to 80 percent recharge taking around 30 minutes.
Hyundai have confirmed next-generation connected car technology for every variant. The SUV will also offer a new infotainment system and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Other expected features include:
V2L would allow owners to power appliances and other devices from the car’s battery, useful during camping trips or outdoor activities.
The latest report points to a January 2027 debut for the SUV, codenamed HE1i. Prices and delivery timelines are yet to be announced.
