Kia Carens Bags 3-Star Rating In Global NCAP Crash Test | V3Cars

Global NCAP recently released their new crash test result in which the Kia Carens scored a disappointing 3-star safety rating. The Kia Carens scored 3 stars in adult occupant safety and 3 stars in child occupant safety. The Carens 3-row people carrier from Kia scored 9.30 points out of 17 for adult safety and 30.99 points out of 49 for child safety.

Global NCAP are likely to have tested the mid-spec variant of the Carens, as we can see the presence of alloy wheels in the video released by the crash-test agency. It is worth noting that all variants of the Kia Carens come with 6 airbags. The rating of the Carens is on par with the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga but lower than that of the Renault Triber. Making matters worse, the bodyshell of the Carens was also rated unstable by Global NCAP. Speaking of occupant protection, the Carens provided marginal protection for driver’s chest and both driver’s and front passenger’s knees.

The Carens is testament to the fact that more airbags doesn’t necessarily improve a car’s crash safety rating. For instance, the Kia Seltos also scored 3 stars in the Global NCAP crash test, albeit with only 2 airbags. It is worth noting that the Seltos and Carens make use of the same platform. However, the Carens has an edge over the Seltos thanks to its standard 6 airbags.

Kia India also made some revisions across their lineup by increasing the basic safety features across all models. Both the Seltos and Sonet now come with 4 airbags as standard along with other nifty features like a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Kia made these changes to address the disappointing crash test result of the Kia Seltos.
