Mahindra and Mahindra has launched a new luxury electric brand Automobili Pininfarina on the eve of the Formula E Rome e-Prix. The newly launched luxury EV brand will be based in Europe and will design, engineer and manufacture high technology, extreme performance luxury electric vehicles targeting the global customers. The autoamker has also announced that its first 'Electric Hypercar' will arrive in 2020 and while the company is headquartered in Munich with car to be rolled out from Turin. Also, as a sign of this big step Mahindra Racing will be wearing Pininfarina colours at the Rome e-Prix on the M4 Electro. The automakers also revealed a special livery on the Gen2 M5 Electro as a homage to the classic race car called 'Sigma'.
Speaking at the launch, Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, said “Italy’s renowned design expertise produces objects of true beauty and unique style. Drawing upon the pedigree and design vocabulary of the Pininfarina aesthetic heritage we will develop a rare collector’s item that only a handful of connoisseurs will ever own. It will be an innovative and pioneering product powered by high technology. The Mahindra Group has bet big on electric vehicles. They are the future, and when power, beauty and high-end EV technology come together in one car – that will be the perfect luxury vehicle, that will give car lovers the freedom to roam without impacting the planet adversely.”
Talking about the luxury brand Automobili Pininfarina, will combine Pininfarina’s legendary automotive design prowess with Mahindra’s growing electric vehicle (EV) expertise gained from its participation in the Formula E electric racing car championship. According to Mahindra, the brand plans to launch its first model, a ‘Pininfarina’ badged electric hypercar, in 2020 staying committed to the high-end luxury market and has no current plans to build a rival to Tesla Model 3.
Also, addressing the media on this big day, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Chairman, Mahindra Racing, said, “We believe that this is the perfect time to launch Automobili Pininfarina, given Mahindra’s growing EV expertise from our participation in Formula E racing where we are currently second in the constructors’ and drivers’ championships, and Pininfarina’s design expertise that will allow us to develop stylish, extreme- performance, electric vehicles for global markets.”
The luxury brand by Mahindra aims to roll out the first product in 2020 and will be an electric sports car with a range of 500 km and will cost about €2 million (around INR 16 crore). The production is said to be limited edition as it will be restricted to less than 100 units globally. Automobili Pininfarina will be led by Michael Perschke, as its Chief Executive Officer. Perschke is the former Managing Director of Audi in India and a member of the Management Board of Volkswagen Group Sales India, from 2010 to 2013. He will be joined by Per Svantesson as Chief Operating Officer in order to play an instrumental role in developing the strategy for Automobili Pininfarina. Svantesson has been with the Volvo Group and NEVS in the past while Loca Borgogno will be the head of design at Automobili Pininfarina.

As confirmed by the company, the first electric hypercar by the luxury brand will be a Grand Lusso or Grand Luxury. The announced electric hypercar will have level 3 autonomous Driving systems and will be capable of doing 0-100 kmph in less than 2 seconds while the 0-300 kmph sprint will be achievable in 12 seconds, with the top speed of over 400 kmph. The manufacturer has announced that the range will be over 500 km on a single charge and will be solely badged 'Pininfarina'.
