Homegrown utility vehicle leader, Mahindra & Mahindra is planning big things in order to grow in a massive scale. The Indian SUV master wishes to become a full range Commercial Vehicle maker in the coming three years’ time. In order to have a full range of commercial vehicles (CV), the company is considering entering new segments of commercial vehicles market.

Moreover, the Indian auto giant is also planning to fuse in its presence in the verticals where the company is already present. The Mahindra Truck and Bus Division (MTBD), which is a part of the multi-billion worth Indian industrial giant Mahindra Group, has also drawn up an ambitious strategy of doubling the unit’s market share to 8 percent in the medium as well as heavy commercial vehicle segments in the coming couple of years’ time. MTBD also plans to export heavy trucks to the African markets in the coming 2 to 3 years.

The Managing Director of Mahindra Truck and Bus Division Nalin Mehta while commenting on the developments said that the company is resolute on becoming a full range commercial vehicle maker in order to grow big in the segment. The company is already present in the medium and heavy truck segments and it is also developing new products for the 8-16 tonnes CV category. Apart from this, there are also plans to update the current range of the company’s LCVs (light commercial vehicles).

Thus, the company wishes to be present in the country’s full CV segment ranging from the 3.5 tonne category to more than 40 tonne category models, he added.

In order to expand its business into other segments of the CV market, the company is going to invest around Rs. 700 crore for product development which has already begun back in the year 2014.

Under this product expansion strategy, the company will launch intermediate commercial vehicles or ICVs, medium commercial vehicles or MCVs, and will upgrade its entire light commercial vehicles or LCV range. Moreover, the company will also consolidate the heavy commercial vehicles or the HCV segment.

MTBD is also aiming for its market share to boost in the coming few years’ of time based on several factors that includes sales network expansion as well as new product offerings.

Mehta added by saying that the company has 4 percent of market share in the heavy duty trucks segment at present, but is recording good growth with the passing of months. The company is thus expecting to double this market shares in the coming two years.

Regarding exports, he said that the company is exporting around 300 trucks. The company is trying to export to the African markets as the commercial vehicle market in Africa has very good potential. This plan should also work out in the next 3 years, he added.

While commenting on the Indian CV industry, Mehta said that in the last two months the market has been experiencing some slowdown when buying sentiments are not as strong. However, after the monsoon the company is expecting a boost in the CV demands.
