by Swati Sanchayi on Tuesday, Jun 12 2018

Maruti Suzuki has announced that they have achieved a new sales milestone by selling over 3 lakh automatic transmission models in the Indian market. Introduced with the Celerio in 2014, Maruti's automated manual transmission (AMT) technology is now available in most of the company's popular models including the Vitara Breeza SUV. According to the company, the AMT models have contributed three times more to the company's total sales since 2014-15 FY and it now aims to sell over 2-lakh cars with AMT by the end of the current 2019 fiscal year.

Commenting on the success of the Auto Gear Shift technology, R S Kalsi, Senior Executive Director, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India, said, "At Maruti Suzuki, we believe in providing our customers with the best of technology and convenience. The revolutionary Auto Gear Shift technology is one such innovation that offers comfort and ease of driving to the customers with no compromise on fuel efficiency. It has achieved wide acceptance among customers. Crossing 3-lakh retail sales mark within five years of its introduction is a reflection of the success and consent of the customers for the two-pedal technology. With enhanced awareness and deeper penetration, we aim to sell over 200,000 cars with AGS in 2018-19."

Maruti Suzuki sources their AMT actuator technology system from Magneti Marelli. This technology is further paired with a five-speed gearbox. The company also enhances its performance to suit each model in their Indian line-up. Currently, the Maruti Suzuki cars that are offered with auto gear shift variant include - Alto K10, Wagon R, Celerio, Swift, Ignis, Dzire, and Vitara Brezza. The company has also enhanced its performance to suit each model in their Indian line-up. Other than this, the Indo- Japanese automaker claimed that 43 percent of the sales of the Celerio is through the AMT variants only while 28 and 17 percent of the total sales of the Ignis and Vitara Brezza models is through the AMT variants, respectively.

The important thing here is to understand that why the automatic gear shift technology has become so popular among the auto enthusiasts. The AGS technology is so revolutionary in the field of automobile that offers comfort and ease of driving to the customers without compromising on fuel efficiency. The affordability, efficiency and easy maintenance are the advantages of the AMT technology that helped the technology gain such acceptance in the market within five years of introduction only.

Apart from Maruti Suzuki, other competitors such as Tata Motors has introduced the AMT technology with Tiago, Tigor and Nexon, Mahindra introduced it with KUV100 and TUV300, French automaker Renault brought Kwid and Duster with the technology and Nissan launched the AMT technology in Terrano. AMTs are cheaper to make than traditional torque-convertor or dual-clutch autos. The tech employed is simpler as well, which means that failures are cheaper to fix. While there are some issues with how AMTs respond in spirited driving, for the most part, these gearboxes perform adequately in city driving. Shifts are smooth at low speeds and the 'head-nod' effect is well contained in the newer iterations of this gearbox tech.
