Maruti May Discontinue The 0.8L Petrol Engine | V3Cars

Maruti Suzuki are likely to discontinue the 0.8L normal petrol engine that powers the current Alto 800 as they gear up to launch the new generation Alto on August 18. We think that the new-gen Alto will only use the 1.0L normal petrol engine and scrap the 0.8L normal petrol engine completely.

There are many reasons that make us think that Maruti will shelve their popular 0.8L petrol engine. Several leaked documents have revealed technical specifications of the new-generation Alto, such as its dimensions and engine specifications. These documents suggest that the new Alto will use a 1.0L normal petrol engine only.

Currently, the Alto 800 is the only Maruti that uses the 0.8L normal petrol engine. All the other small cars from Maruti, such as the WagonR and the Celerio, use the 1.0L normal petrol engine. Hence, it would only make sense to use the same engine for the new-gen Alto as well. This will save costs required to run a different production line for a different engine.

Last but not the least, the 1.0L engine produces more power than the 0.8L engine. The 1.0L K10N normal petrol engine produces 67PS of power and 89Nm of torque. These figures are significantly higher than the 0.8L engine’s 48PS of power and 69Nm of torque. This will give the new Alto a good power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratio. This step will also allow Maruti to price the new Alto at a premium.
