Japanese auto major, Nissan has decided to present its new Leaf electric car in a sportier avatar at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show. For this, Nissan has employed its motorsports and racing division, NISMO to work on its popular Leaf all-electric hatchback.

The sportier version of the Nissan Leaf plug-in electric hatchback is slated to be revealed in its concept form on 25th of October. As a result of NISMO’s work on the Leaf, the concept will be flaunting a much more aggressive and beefy external visual appeal. It comes with a large and stylized front apron, wider air intakes as well as side skirts.

However, it is good to mention that these external body parts haven’t been changed only to make the Leaf look beefier and make it look more attractive. These exterior design elements have been changed in order to improve the car’s aerodynamics, which would increase downforce and reduce the front axle lift as the vehicle accelerates. NISMO has also fitted the electric hatchback with bigger and wider wheels which are wrapped in racing performance tyres in place of the conventional rolling resistance tyres which are fitted on EVs as well as plug-in hybrid models in order to enhance the energy reservation capability of the cars from regenerative braking system.

Apart from all these exterior changes, the Nissan Leaf’s suspension has been also fully overhauled to make the car more stable and sure during cornering and sturdier and planted at higher speeds. Just like the standard Leaf, the new Nissan Leaf NISMO concept will have nothing under its hood excepting a charging plug for the vehicle’s battery pack.

The Leaf NISMO concept has been also technologically changed and improved, as NISMO has been creative with the car’s microprocessors and reprogrammed the vehicle’s onboard computer in order to make it more responsive and sporty rather than focusing primarily on the environmental aspect. The NISMO Leaf will also offer more fun to drive experience by offering instant acceleration and more responsive drive rather than focusing on holding on to the battery charge. Thus, to put in a nutshell, the new Nissan Leaf NISMO concept will be sportier electric car altogether, in terms of looks as well as performance.

Now, the best part is that the NISMO Leaf is not simply meant to be a concept for showcasing purpose, and is actually a preview of an upcoming production model. Nissan hopes that it will widen the customer base for the Leaf and increase its appeal. The sportier NISMO Leaf is aimed at impressing the rich younger buyers, who might not be interested in the too sober Leaf.

As the electric vehicle market is heating up across the world, Nissan has to work harder to ensure that its Leaf keeps on getting enough attention from the buyers. The Leaf might be the top selling EV, but its leading position is much doubted in the future as innumerable auto majors, including luxury car makers are bringing out their electric offerings. Thus, Nissan is smart in creating a snazzier and sportier version of its Leaf through NISMO.
