Suzuki Jimny Spotted Testing In India Again

by Saransh Goyal on Tuesday, Oct 20 2020

Maruti Suzuki showcased the Suzuki Jimny in India at the 2020 Auto Expo. While the carmaker has no plans on launching the 3-door Jimny in India, Maruti is said to be working on a 5-door version of the Jimny for the local market. However, recently, a 3-door version of the Jimny was spotted testing in India.

After seeing the kind of reception that the 3-door Thar has received in the country, it might be possible that Maruti may consider the 3-door Jimny as well for India. And as far as the 5-door Jimny is concerned, it can compete with the 5-door Thar which is also said to be under development. On the other hand, the 3-door Jimny may be a test bed of the 5-door Jimny that will eventually arrive.

Despite being a small SUV, the 3-door Jimny can also seat up to 4 individuals but it loses on boot space, which could be a major con for the Indian buyers. The 5-door Jimny will address this with a bigger cabin and more boot space.

Globally, the Jimny is available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 105PS of maximum power and 138Nm of peak torque mated to 5-speed MT or a 4-speed AT. The Jimny gets a 4WD system with a low range gearbox as well, for off-roading. If launched in India, the Jimny will get an identical setup but Maruti might also introduce a 2WD version and price it competitively.

Although the Jimny is primarily designed for off-road, it doesn’t compromise on comfort and modern features. It gets multiple airbags, auto AC, rain-sensing wipers and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, among others.

If Maruti chooses to sell the 3-door Jimny in India, it could launch soon, as Maruti is already manufacturing it in India for the global markets. Otherwise, the 5-door Jimny is expected to go on sale in 2021. It is likely to be sold through Maruti’s premium Nexa line of dealerships. The Jimny will take on the likes of the Mahindra Thar and the upcoming Force Gurkha.
