Tata Punch 2 Lakh Sales Milestone

Launched back in October 2021, the Tata Punch touched the 1 lakh sales milestone in just 10 months of its launch and the next 50,000 units were sold in the following 5 months. Tata have now revealed that the Punch is now the fastest SUV to touch the 2 lakh production milestone in the country by recording the figure in just 19 months.

A Little Back Story

Ever since the Punch was launched back in 2021, the carmaker hasn’t brought any major changes to the small SUV other than a few special editions. Recently, the Punch gained BS6 phase-2 and road driving emission standard compliance, which resulted in better fuel efficiency and improved noise vibration and harshness levels for the petrol engine.

The prominent reason behind the runaway success of the Punch was Tata’s move to capitalise on the B1 SUV segment, which is also known as the Small SUV segment. However, since the launch of the Punch, we have seen more competitors in the small SUV segment, such as the Citroen C3 and the recently-launched Maruti Suzuki Fronx. The emerging competition sheds light on the weakest link of the Punch, which is the absence of a turbo petrol engine. Both the C3 and Fronx offer a turbo petrol option, and the Fronx holds the upper hand by also offering a turbo petrol automatic option.

What Lies Ahead For The Tata Punch?

Going further, we expect Tata Motors to add more powertrain options to the Punch which should help it to continue its legacy in the small SUV space. Even before launching the turbo petrol engine, it is crucial for Tata Motors to launch the Punch CNG to steal customer attention from the soon-to-be-launched Hyundai Exter, which will have a CNG powertrain option from launch. Furthermore, we think it's high time the Tata Punch gets a turbo petrol engine to cater to the needs of buyers who want an extra burst of performance from their urban small SUV.
