Toyota Innova Hycross Flex Fuel Revealed

The Toyota Innova Hycross Flex Fuel is the first model in India to support E100 fuel. As the name suggests, E100 fuel is pure ethanol without any blend of petrol, unlike in the case of E20, which consists of only 20% ethanol mixed with petrol. While a few Toyota cars in Brazil like the Corolla Altis hybrid also support E100 fuel, they comply with less stringent emission norms in comparison to India’s BS6 phase-2 norms. Hence, the Innova Hycross Flex Fuel is the first vehicle in the world to comply with the BS6 phase-2 emission norms while simultaneously running on 100% ethanol.

Benefits Of Ethanol As A Fuel

Ethanol isn’t a new concept in the market since the fuel we use today already consists of 10% ethanol blend. Ethanol is extracted from sugarcane, maize and even agricultural waste materials. Since India has a surplus quantity of sugarcane and other waste materials, ethanol production is indigenous and also friendlier to the environment. A report claims that India has reduced its petrol import bill by Rs. 41,500 crore by blending 10% ethanol in fuel in the last 8 years.

Furthermore, ethanol-powered vehicles also emit less CO2 than their petrol-only equivalents. Since India plans to transition to E20 fuel by 2025, the country is expected to save Rs. 35,000 crores annually in the oil import bill and also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 21 million metric tons. Additionally, E20 fuel will also reduce PM2.5 emissions by up to 14% compared to petrol.

Toyota Innova Hycross Flex Fuel Specifications

The Innova Hycross flex fuel uses the same hybrid powertrain as the regular Hycross hybrid. It comes with a 2.0L 4-cylinder normal petrol engine along with a pair of electric motors and a 1.31kWh battery pack. However, since it is tuned to comply with upto 100% ethanol, it produces considerably less power than the petrol hybrid. The Innova Hycross flex fuel offers 145.4PS of power, which is less than the petrol hybrid’s 184PS output. The torque output, however, remains the same at 188Nm for the engine and 206Nm for the electric motor. Toyota India have not shared any launch timeline for the Innova Hycross Flex Fuel and it’s currently in the prototype phase.
