A few days ago, we had reported that Toyota are looking to bring a small SUV to India with “mini Land Cruiser” traits. The rumours suggested that it could slot between the Hyryder and the Hycross to compete with the Tata Safari, Harrier and Mahindra XUV700. According to the reports, it could launch in India by 2026 but we believe that it’s too late and it shouldn’t take more than 2 years to develop and bring it to market. Thus a 2025 launch timeline sounds like a more reasonable bet. The latest rumour suggests that Toyota may call it the Land Hopper as they hold the rights to this name in Japan.

The source also indicates that the Toyota Land Hopper could measure about 4350mm long, 1850mm wide and 1880mm tall. These dimensions make it about as big as a typical C-segment SUV like the Hyryder and Creta but it’s wider and taller. In fact, its width and height are more in line with those of the Thar. Toyota people reportedly call it the “Jimny killer” among themselves. Considering the puny dimensions, limited off-road abilities and bare-adequate bottom end torque (compared to Thar), it wouldn’t take much effort to kill the Jimny. It would, however, take a lot to challenge and take down the Thar.

A 1.5-litre petrol engine is one of the possible powertrains for the Land Hopper for markets like India. We should expect the India-spec version to get a hybrid powertrain as well. It’s also unclear if it will get a body on frame or a unibody frame. Regardless, to really kill something like the Jimny or Thar, it would need a rugged body on frame. Moreover, a monocoque frame would not go well with a car named Land Hopper. Toyota are likely to showcase the Land Hopper at the Tokyo auto show in the coming weeks. We should expect it to go on sale in India sometime in 2025 as Toyota already have a few more cars in the pipeline for the Indian market like the Urban Cruiser Taisor.
