The Hyundai i20 petrol has the following shortcomings or problems:
The Hyundai i20 is available with a 1.2L normal petrol engine and you can have it with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission. The manual transmission is available in all 5 variants with prices ranging from Rs. 6.99 lakh to Rs. 9.98 lakh (ex-showroom). The automatic transmission is available in the Sportz and Asta (O) variants with an ex-showroom price of Rs. 9.38 lakh and Rs. 11.01 lakh, respectively. The CVT automatic costs around Rs. 1.05 lakh more than the comparable manual variants.

The base Era variant is only available with the petrol-manual powertrain and costs Rs. 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
The most notable standard features of the i20 base model are:
This variant doesn’t get a few important features like:
Considering the nominal incremental cost for the higher Magna variant, the lack of several must-have features in the base model and the list of must-have features of the Magna trim, we’ll suggest all budget buyers to buy the Magna instead of the i20 Era.
The Magna variant also gets the same petrol-manual powertrain and costs Rs. 7.70 lakh. It’s Rs. 70,410 more expensive than the lower Era variant.
For the additional price, the Magna variant gets the following features over the base Era variant:
In this variant, you might miss important features like:
The Magna variant is a fantastic choice for buyers who don’t want to stretch their budget any further. We wish it also offered the option of an automatic transmission.
The Sportz variant is available with both petrol-manual and petrol-automatic powertrains. With the petrol-manual powertrain, it costs Rs. 8.33 lakh. With the automatic, it costs Rs. 9.38 lakh, which is Rs. 1.05 lakh more than the manual. Compared to the Magna petrol-manual, it costs Rs. 63,000 more.
The Sportz variant gets the following features over the lower Magna variant:
In this variant, you might miss important features like:
From a value standpoint, the Sportz is not the best option but it earns our top recommendation for the balance of must-have and good-to-have features. Moreover, it’s not a poor value option in any way. In fact, it more than justifies the incremental cost over the base model. It just doesn’t manage to earn the top spot.
The Asta variant is only available with the petrol-manual powertrain and it costs Rs. 9.29 lakh (ex-showroom). This price is Rs. 96,000 more than the lower Sportz variant.
The Asta variant gets the following features over the Sportz variant:
In this variant, you might miss features like:
The Asta variant is the most value for money option in the entire i20 lineup but it gets mostly good-to-have features. So, you can consider upgrading to it if you find them desirable.
Asta (O) is the top model of the Hyundai i20 and it gets both the petrol-manual and petrol-automatic powertrains. The i20 Asta (O) petrol-manual costs Rs. 9.98 lakh while the automatic costs Rs. 11.01 lakh. The i20 Asta (O) is Rs. 69,000 more expensive than the lower Asta variant.
The Asta (O) variant gets the following features over the Asta variant:
In this variant, you might miss features like:
The top model of the i20 gets almost exclusively good-to-have features, so we won’t encourage you to buy it. Moreover, when the lower Asta offers far better value, there’s no point in throwing it all away for a few features, which you may not even appreciate all that often during the ownership.
For the i20 petrol-manual buyers, there are 2 straightforward choices. The Magna is for budget buyers while the Sportz is our top recommendation. The Asta trim is also worth upgrading to if you like some of its features. Meanwhile, the base model is not recommended and the top model is an expensive upgrade.
For the i20 petrol-CVT automatic buyers, the Sportz variant is our top recommendation. The price jump to the i20 Asta (O) is quite big but worth it from a value standpoint for the additional features.
The i20’s 1.2L normal petrol engine offers performance, which is on par with the rivals. It’s all business as usual in this department; no deal breakers but nothing outstanding either.

In terms of dimensions, the i20 offers phenomenal road presence as it’s wider than even the C-segment sedans and it’s almost up there with the C-segment SUVs like the Grand Vitara and Hyundai Creta. The i20 also has the longest wheelbase in its segment. Its wheel size, ground clearance and boot space are about average for a B2-segment hatchback.
