The Shine trim adds a lot of functional, style and functionality to the list for the asking price. So, we strongly suggest you buy the Shine variant if you can stretch your budget a bit.
Please note that keyless entry, telescopic steering and e-brake are only available with the CVT automatic. With these additional exclusive features, the Shine CVT automatic also becomes our top-recommended variant. The only feature we feel is missing in this variant is the auto AC.

MG Hector Petrol Shine vs Smart Variant
The price difference between the Hector Shine and Smart petrol manual is Rs.1.86 lakh as the Smart also adds hybrid technology. In the case of the automatic transmission, the price gap shrinks down to Rs. 1.28 lakh as the automatic doesn’t get hybrid petrol engine. Therefore, the Smart petrol automatic is only Rs. 62,000 more expensive than the Smart petrol manual.

The Smart variant of the MG Hector adds front parking sensors, wireless phone charger, power-adjustable driver seat, swiping turn indicators, LED taillights, side airbags, power-folding mirrors, auto-dimming IRVM, Infinity sound system with woofer and larger 18-inch machined alloy wheels. However, it misses out on the sunroof, which is available in the Shine trim.
Considering the features it adds, the Smart petrol manual definitely doesn’t justify the upgrade over the Shine variant. Still, Hector automatic buyers can consider this variant if you don’t want the sunroof. The Smart variant doesn’t manage to beat the Shine in terms of value for money. Moreover, even the Smart variant doesn’t offer auto AC, which is a big miss as cars costing half of this also have this feature.

Which Variant Of The MG Hector Petrol Should You Buy?
Let’s start with the Hector petrol manual transmission. The base model, Hector Style, is reasonably loaded and priced but the Shine’s value for money is difficult to ignore. You should at least buy the Shine variant as it has a decent mix of style and functional features.
Beyond this, the Smart petrol manual is not recommended as the additional cost for the hybrid tech is difficult to justify with a nominally better mileage figure. However, the Sharp is worth buying if you want luxurious features like a powered tailgate, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting and others.

In the case of MG Hector petrol automatic, the Shine variant is our top pick for the value it offers. Smart is worth considering but the Sharp is the full package. It also gets a powered front passenger seat, which is not available in the Sharp petrol manual.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The MG Hector Petrol?
Besides the Hector, the XUV700 is the only other D-segment SUV with a petrol engine option. The Hector’s smaller turbo petrol engine makes considerably less power and torque than the XUV700. Still, the Hector’s power-to-weight ratio is only about 10% less than the XUV700’s. The torque-to-weight ratio is also not as underwhelming as the torque output may suggest.

The XUV700 petrol has about 50% better torque output than the Hector petrol but Hector’s torque-to-weight ratio is only 18% lower than the XUV700. So, the difference in performance is and drivability is not going to be as drastic as the power and torque difference suggests. Unfortunately, we don’t have the XUV700’s mileage figures to compare against Hector’s
