
In this April 2022 cars sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures for each carmaker, segment and body style in India. We’ll also include our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales, where applicable.

Renault have further expanded their presence in India with two new dealerships in Delhi-NCR. The first dealership, called Renault Delhi North, is situated at G.T.K road, Industrial Road, Azadpur. The second dealership, called Renault Sonipat, is located at Industrial Area, Sonipat. Both dealerships are capable of having 3 cars on display, with 3600sq.fr and 6200sq.ft respectively. Renault India now boasts of 500 sales and 530+ service stations, which include 250+ workshop on wheels service vans.

Tata India recently increased the prices of the Tigor EV by up to Rs. 25,000. After this price revision, the Tigor EV's ex-showroom prices now start at Rs. 12.49 lakh and top out at Rs. 13.49 lakh. The new May 2022 prices are between 1.89% and 2.04% higher than before.

Soon after its global launch, Land Rover India have announced the prices for the Range Rover Sport. Land Rover India are currently accepting orders only for the diesel-powered variants, while other engine options are likely to be offered at a later date. Land Rover offer the Range Rover Sport in four variants — SE, HSE, Autobiography and First edition. Land Rover have listed the Range Rover Sport as a 2023 model and deliveries are likely to begin by November 2022.

Tata Motors India recently increased the prices of the Nexon EV by up to Rs. 25,000. After this price revision, the Nexon EV's ex-showroom prices now start at Rs. 14.79 lakh and top out at Rs. 17.4 lakh. The new May 2022 prices are between 1.23% and 1.72% higher than before.

After the launch of the City e:HEV hybrid, Honda Cars India have given the City sedan a feature revision. While the 4th-gen City has gained an advantage from the revision, the 5th-gen City loses a couple of features.

Kia India are testing various powertrains for compatibility with CNG fuel to serve cost-conscious buyers. We reported earlier that Kia are testing the Sonet CNG with the 1.0L turbo petrol engine. While the Sonet turbo petrol comes with a 6-speed auto-clutch manual transmission, we expect the Sonet CNG to come with a manual transmission.

Lately, several car manufacturers are offering their new cars with a dual-clutch automatic transmission or DCT. The latest mass-market car to get a DCT transmission is the Tata Altroz. While DCTs are now more polished and reliable than ever before, the earlier versions were notorious for failing in our conditions, causing owners to spend a hefty sum for repairs. Gradually, cars equipped with unreliable DCTs lost favour with customers before being pulled off the market altogether.

With fuel prices at an all time high, carmakers are now considering alternative fuels. While the electric vehicle segment is still at a nascent stage, CNG-powered cars have become popular among cost-conscious car buyers. Several carmakers are betting big on CNG fuel. Hyundai and Kia are also developing CNG bedrooms of their popular cars to cater to this segment. At the launch of the Slavia, Skoda anticipated the 1.5L variants of the sedan to make up around 15% of the overall sales. As per the latest sales report, the 1.5L powertrain accounts for over 30% of the total Slavia sales, which is double the share Skoda had anticipated. Owing to the great response from the market, Skoda India are now considering introducing the Slavia RS in the near future.
