In this May 2023 cars sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change for the 20 top-selling cars of May 2023. Using this data, we will also provide our observations and insights on the reasons for significant improvements or declines in sales, where relevant.

May 2023 - 20 Top-Selling Cars YoY Change

Toyota’s Innova pair(Crysta and Hycross) reported the best growth, with a gain of over 184% in terms of YoY comparison.
The next best YoY performer in May 2023 was the Mahindra Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic pair, with around over 114% gains.
The WagonR was the best-selling car in India in April 2023, with almost 21,000 units sold in the month of April 2023. But for the month of May, Maruti Nexa Baleno emerged as the best-selling car with about 19,000 units sold.
The top 11 best selling cars in May 2023 sold well over 10,000 units each.
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios was the top loser in the YoY comparison analysis with over 30% decline in numbers.
Maruti’s Alto and Alto K10 pair lost sales by 27.57% in the YoY comparison analysis for the month of May. The pair from Maruti was followed by Ertiga with a 14% decline in the YoY comparison analysis for the month of May.
Half of the models on the top 20 bestselling list in May 2023 are from Maruti, and in May of 2023, the top 3 spots were taken by Maruti cars.
Hyundai Creta and Tata Nexon were on the 4th and 5th spot in best-sellers ranking for the month of May.
Hyundai had 4 cars and Tata had 3 cars in May 2023’s YoY top 20 performers’ list. Mahindra had just 2 models and Kia had 2 cars in the top 20 list.

May 2023 - 20 Top-Selling Cars MoM Change

The Ertiga was the top-performer in terms of MoM comparison analysis for the month of May, with over 90% increase in dispatches as compared to April 2023, surpassing Toyota Innova Crysta and Hycross’s growth numbers.
The Innova pair was the second best performer in the MoM comparison for the month of May, with a near 60.76% growth in sales.
Half the top-20 selling cars in the list saw a MoM decline in dispatch numbers, which includes names like WagonR which was the top losing car MoM comparison with a decline of 22.20%.
WagonR was followed by the Alto and Alto K10 pair, which saw a decline of 19% in MoM comparison for May.
Maruti launched the B2-segment SUV Fronx in May and it is already in the top-12 selling cars list with 9,863 units sold in its 2nd month in the market, with an MoM growth of 12.28%.
