In this February 2023 detailed car sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures for each car and the YoY, MoM change each car witnessed in the same month.
We’ll also include sales figures from the last 6 months to give you an idea about the 6-month trend of each car on sale in India and share our observations.
- Speaking of consistent performers over the last 6 months, top five cars ranked by the average sales over the last 6 months are:
- Maruti Alto/Alto K10 (A-Hatch, 18,323)
- Maruti Suzuki Baleno (B2-Hatch, 18,224)
- Maruti Suzuki WagonR (B1-Hatch, 16,713)
- Maruti Suzuki Swift (B1-Hatch, 15,214)
- Tata Nexon (B2-SUV, 14,282)
- As it is clear from the numbers, Maruti holds the biggest market share owing to its consistently good selling cars. 4 out of 5 cars with best average sales for 6 months are from Maruti Suzuki.
- Tata has done something right with their B2-segment SUV, the Nexon, as it stands 5th out of 78 cars on sale in the Indian market currently.
- Disregarding the numbers of low volume cars like Marazzo and Kona Electric, the Scorpios were the clear winner in terms of YoY gains in February. They recorded a YoY growth of about 166%.

- Skoda Kodiaq (182.09%)
- Mahindra Scorpio-N + Classic (166%)
- Toyota Vellfire (93.55%)

- Hyundai i20 (59.30%)
- The top selling brand for the month of February 2023 was Maruti Suzuki, with over 1 lakh 47 thousand units sold, which is almost unchanged from the previous month
- The total sales of brands in the month of February in comparison to the total sales in January are as follows:
- Maruti’s supremacy over the Indian car market is such that Maruti would have to lose over 1,00,000 units in sales to match the second best-selling brand, Hyundai.
- The Baleno from Maruti Suzuki was the best-selling model in February, with over 18,500 units sold.
- The manufacturer with the least units sold in February was Citroen, with just 328 units.
- In the last 6-9 months, we’ve witnessed a lot of action in the Indian auto industry with a bunch of new car launches, generation updates and mid-life refreshes. We can expect a lot more to happen in 2023.

Government Allows E100 Fuel For Flex-Fuel Cars – What Changes For Buyers?
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) have amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989, to formally recognise E100 fuel for compatible flex-fuel vehicles. The change creates a clearer regulatory pathway for automakers to develop and certify vehicles that can run on higher ethanol blends, including fuel containing 100% ethanol. However, it does not mean that existing petrol cars can use E100 or that the fuel will become available at every petrol pump immediately.

Hyundai Bayon CNG Launch In January 2027
Hyundai have confirmed that the Bayon CNG will launch in India in January 2027. The upcoming CNG version of Hyundai’s new C-segment SUV is expected to use the petrol model’s 1.5L non-turbo petrol engine, albeit with lower power and torque outputs. It will also feature an underbody CNG tank to preserve boot space.
Jeep Compass Sport AT Launched At Rs. 22 Lakh
Jeep India have launched the Compass Sport base variant with a 9-speed automatic transmission at Rs. 21.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Compared to the 2026 Compass Sport manual variant, the new Compass Sport AT costs Rs. 4 lakh more and serves as the entry-level variant with an automatic gearbox. Deliveries are scheduled to begin by the second week of November 2026.
Hyundai Bayon Launched At Rs. 10 Lakh
Hyundai have launched the Bayon at an introductory starting price of Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom). Buyers can choose a 1.5L normal petrol engine with either a 6-speed manual transmission or CVT automatic.

The Hyundai Bayon 2026 offers several premium comfort, convenience, technology and safety features. Highlights include AI-powered voice assistance, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS.
