The 6 variants of the Mahindra Thar Roxx 2024 are available with 4 powertrain options:
The turbo petrol engine with the 6-speed manual transmission is available in the lower MX1 and MX5 variants. These variants cost Rs. 12.99 lakh and Rs.16.49 lakh, respectively. The same engine with the 6-speed torque converter automatic is available in MX3, MX5 and AX7 L variants. Prices of these 3 variants cost Rs. 14.99 lakh, Rs. 17.99 lakh and Rs. 19.99 lakh, respectively. All automatic variants of the new Thar Roxx carry a premium of Rs. 1.50 lakh over the comparable variants with the manual transmission.
The diesel engine is available in all the variants (expect AX5 L) with manual as well as automatic transmission. Their prices of Roxx diesel 2WD start from Rs. 13.99 lakh for the MX1 diesel-manual and go up to Rs. 20.49 lakh for the AX7 L diesel-automatic. With the diesel engine, 4WD drivetrain will also become available soon and Mahindra will announce the prices later.
The price difference between the petrol and diesel engine with manual transmission of the Thar Roxx is up to Rs. 1.0 lakh. With the automatic transmission, the price difference is even more inconsistent. For the MX5 variant, the price jump from petrol to diesel powertrain is only Rs. 50,000 while the gap for MX3 is Rs. 2.50 lakh.
We are expecting the prices of the 4WD drivetrain will be Rs. 1.5 - 2.0 lakh higher than the 2WD drivetrain. The following table contains the expected prices of the Thar Roxx turbo diesel-MT/Auto (4WD):
The MX1 base model of the Thar Roxx gets the turbo petrol engine and turbo diesel engine with a manual transmission only. While the petrol variant carries an ex-showroom price tag of Rs. 12.99 lakh, the diesel engine will cost you Rs. 13.99 lakh.
It offers the following standard features:
In the base model of the Thar Roxx, you may miss the following features:
Despite a few missing features, the base variant of the Thar Roxx comes across as fairly well loaded. It has enough features to meet a budget buyer’s needs and it offers decent value for money. So, it’s easy to recommend this to a Roxx petrol-manual and diesel-manual buyer.
The next variant of the Thar Roxx is MX3 which is available with all the powertrain options except the petrol-manual. The Thar Roxx MX3 petrol-automatic costs Rs. 14.99 lakh, which is Rs. 2.0 lakh more than the MX1 petrol-manual. For the diesel-manual option, you’ll have to pay another Rs. 1.0 lakh.
The MX3 diesel-manual costs Rs. 15.99 lakh, which is Rs. 2.0 lakh costlier than the MX1 variant. MX3 variant onwards, all automatic variants carry a premium of Rs. 1.50 lakh over the manual transmission.
In addition to all the features of the base variant, the Thar Roxx MX3 adds the following features to the mix:
In the Roxx MX3 variant, you may miss the following features:
The Thar Roxx MX3 is available with petrol-auto, diesel-manual and diesel auto powertrain options. For petrol-auto buyers who don't want to spend any more, this is a suitable pick. However, for diesel-manual and diesel-auto buyers, this variant of the Thar Roxx is not recommended as it offers poor value for money.
The next variant of the Thar Roxx is the MX5, which costs Rs. 16.49 lakh with the petrol-manual, and the automatic option is Rs. 3.0 lakh pricier than the MX3. For the diesel-automatic transmission, you will have to pay another Rs. 1.50 lakh.
Over the MX3 trim, the MX5 gets the following additional features:
Considering the asking price, you may miss the following features in the MX5 variant of the Thar Roxx:
The MX5 variant of the Thar Roxx gets all four powertrain options. We don’t recommend buying this variant with any of the four powertrains. Consider stretching your budget or shrinking it and selecting another variant to get better value for your money.
The new Mahindra Thar Roxx AX3 L is only available with a diesel-manual powertrain option. It costs Rs. 16.99 lakh which is the same as the lower MX5 variant.
Over the lower MX5 variant, the Thar Roxx AX3 L offers the following additional features:
In the AX3 L variant also, you may miss the following features:
The AX3 L is only available with the diesel-manual powertrain. Since it offers a decent value for money, it’s worth buying if you are interested in the Roxx diesel-manual.
The new Mahindra Thar Roxx AX5 L adds Rs. 2.0 lakh to the asking price of the lower AX3 L trim but its list of additional features is very small.
The price jump to the AX5 L variant is big but the additional feature list is very small. It gets the following extra features over and above those of the Thar Roxx AX3 L:
In AX5 L also, you may miss the same features as in the AX3 L:
The AX5 L variant is only available with the diesel-automatic powertrain. This variant is also worth buying if you’re interested in the Thar Roxx diesel-automatic.
The top variant of the Thar Roxx is the AX7 L. It gets all the powertrain options except the petrol-manual option. The AX7 L variant’s price range starts from Rs. 19.99 lakh and goes up to Rs. 20.49 lakh.
The AX7 L variant gets the following features over the AX5 L:
Even in the top variant of the Thar Roxx, you may miss the following features:
The Roxx top model AX7 L is available with petrol-automatic, diesel-manual and diesel-automatic powertrain options. This variant offers good value for money with all 3 powertrain options and is worth buying.
If you're planning to buy the Thar Roxx and you want the most affordable variant, that too with the petrol-manual powertrain — then the good news is that MX1 is the best option for budget-conscious buyers. Apart from this, the MX5 variant also comes with a petrol-manual powertrain and rear-wheel-drive setup, but it is not worth upgrading due to a considerably lower VFM score.
However, even for those considering the MX1 manual, the MX3 automatic is a better option. Given the limited footwell area space in the Roxx, we’d recommend that if you are buying this car for regular use, you should opt for the automatic transmission. It will be more convenient and better in terms of ergonomics as well. The automatic transmission comes with the MX3, MX5 and AX7L variants with the petrol engine. Based on your needs and budget, you can either buy the MX3 variant or the AX7L variant. The MX5 offers lower value for money than the other two and we don’t recommend it for Thar Roxx petrol-automatic buyers.
With the diesel-manual powertrain also, the base variant of the Roxx is a suitable option for budget-conscious buyers. The MX3 variant above it is an extremely expensive upgrade for the additional features it offers. We strongly recommend that you avoid the MX3 diesel-manual. Beyond that, instead of the MX5, it’s better to choose either the AX3 L or AX7 L – based on your feature preferences and budget. Since the AX7L is the most value-for-money variant, upgrading to this variant makes a lot of sense.
The diesel-automatic powertrain is available in the MX3, MX5, AX5 L, and AX7 L variants. Value-wise, it would make the most sense to choose either the AX5 L or AX7 L variant based on your needs, feature preferences and budget.
Among the C1-segment SUVs with big turbo petrol engines, the Thar Roxx’s performance figures demolishes the competition with best-in-class power and torque figures. Naturally, the larger displacement of 2.0 litres has something to do with that. That also affects the mileage figures of the Thar Roxx, which Mahindra haven’t announced officially. We don’t expect to hear from them on this matter either; at least not officially.
With the diesel-powered C-segment SUVs, the Thar Roxx shines with class-leading power and torque figures. Here too, the higher displacement of 2.2 litres helps the Roxx. Once again, you can be sure that the performance comes at a cost. And, we’re not talking about the upfront higher cost of the Thar Roxx but the higher cost per kilometre you’ll have to pay during the ownership. While Mahindra haven’t made the ARAI mileage figures public, rest assured that they’re not anywhere close to what you can expect from the Seltos, Creta or Curvv diesel in everyday driving.
You can use our Fuel Cost Calculator to see how much any petrol, diesel or CNG car will cost to run based on the latest fuel price in your city.
In terms of dimensions, against the most relevant C-segment SUV rivals, the Thar Roxx is the widest. It also has the longest wheelbase and the largest wheel size. Since it has a body-on-frame construction, it’s also the tallest. We don’t yet know the official ground clearance figure but we expect it to be about the same as that of the Thar, which is 226. So, in this area as well, the Thar demolishes the competition.
Since the Kushaq and Taigun are much smaller than the Roxx, we have excluded them from this dimension comparison. The Basalt and Curvv have a much smaller, 1.2L turbo petrol, so they are out too. Finally, the Elevate, Hyryder and Vitara don’t have a turbo petrol or a turbo diesel engine to compete with the Thar Roxx. So, they’re not a good match and worth comparing with the Roxx.
