What Are The Pros And Cons Of The Maruti Suzuki WagonR?
The pros or advantages of Maruti WagonR are:
- Good value for money pricing for the ZXI Plus variant makes it an easy recommendation for WagonR buyers from a value and usability angle
- Tall boy design gives it phenomenal head room and unmistakable road presence
- Efficient petrol engines offer top of the class mileage figures
- Negligible mileage and cost difference between 1.2L and 1.0L engines makes the 1.2L worth the upgrade for better drivability, performance and refinement
- WagonR has a very high residual value in the used car market given its popularity
- Maruti Suzuki’s wide service network makes it extremely easy to find spares (first party and OEM-spec) and skilled labour for the WagonR
- Optional manual and automatic transmissions with both engines; CNG bi-fuel also available with the 1.0L engine
The Maruti Suzuki WagonR has the following shortcomings or problems:
- 1.2L CNG not available with the ZXI variant
- WagonR’s popularity also makes it quite common and doesn’t stand out on the road
- Inflation and the WagonR’s popularity are also pushing the prices of the WagonR to heights; the top model costs as much as Rs. 7.50 lakh ex-showroom, which may be a difficult to digest for a WagonR (the Nios Sportz offers far better feature mix for not a lot of money)
- Ground clearance of 165mm doesn’t do justice to a tall car like WagonR; we wish it had at least 170mm (or 175mm) clearance
- CNG variants fail to justify the incremental cost after factoring in their poor performance and negligible boot space
What Is The Price Of Maruti Suzuki Suzuki WagonR Variants?
The Maruti Suzuki WagonR is available with 5 engine-transmission combinations:
- 1.0L normal petrol with manual
- 1.0L normal petrol with AMT automatic
- 1.2L normal petrol with manual
- 1.2L normal petrol with AMT automatic
- 1.0L normal CNG bi-fuel with manual
The 1.0L petrol engine is only available in the LXI and VXI variants while the 1.2L petrol engine is only available in the ZXI and ZXI Plus variants. All variants are available with a petrol-manual combination while petrol-automatic is available in all variants except the base model. The WagonR’s prices start at Rs. 5.79 lakh and go up to Rs. 7.50 lakh.

Meanwhile, the CNG bi-fuel option, which is available in LXI 1.0L and VXI 1.0L variants, costs Rs. 90,000 more than the comparable petrol-manual variants.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR LXI — Base Standard Model Features
The base LXI variant of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR is only available with the 1.0L normal petrol engine and a 1.0L CNG bi-fuel engine option. It costs Rs. 5.79 lakh (ex-showroom) with the petrol engine and Rs. 6.69 lakh with the CNG bi-fuel option.

With the LXI variant, the petrol-manual variant is not recommended as it doesn’t get a few must-have features, which are available in the higher VXI variant without compromising on value for money.
With the CNG powertrain, the LXI variant offers a pathetic value for money of just 42%. This is after factoring in the much lower performance and negligible boot space.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR LXI Vs VXI Variant — Price, Feature Comparison
The WagonR VXI variant gets 3 powertrain options — 1.0L petrol-manual, 1.0L petrol-automatic, 1.0L CNG-manual. With the 1.0L petrol-manual, the VXI variant costs Rs. 6.24 lakh and with the 1.0L automatic, it costs Rs. 6.74 lakh. The WagonR VXI CNG-manual costs Rs. 7.13 lakh (ex-showroom). These prices are Rs. 45,000 more than the LXI variant.

For the additional sum, you get the following features over the base LXI variant:

Considering the ex-showroom price, the base variant doesn’t get several must-have features like:
- AC
- Power steering
- Wheel covers
- 14-inch wheels
- Music system
- Remote central locking
- Front power windows
- Body-coloured bumpers
The VXI variant offers good value for money and a bunch of must-have features. But you should consider it only if you don’t see yourself driving on the highways much. The upgrade to ZXI variant will give you better performance for highways and better drivability in city driving without compromising in efficiency or value.
For CNG buyers, despite a much lower fuel cost, the VXI doesn’t manage to justify the incremental cost over the base model because of poor performance and high upfront cost. If you are still hell bent on buying a CNG, make sure you intend to drive the car for more than 1 lakh kilometres during the ownership. Else, you’re better off with the petrol engine and using the cost savings towards fuel expense.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR VXI vs ZXI Variant — Price, Feature Comparison
The Maruti Suzuki WagonR ZXI variant is available only with the 1.2L petrol engine and has the option of a manual and an AMT automatic transmission. The ZXI petrol-manual costs Rs. 6.52 lakh while the petrol-automatic costs Rs. 7.02 lakh. It’s Rs. 28,500 more expensive than the lower VXI 1.0L variants.

For this additional price, the WagonR ZXI adds only 2 notable features over the VXI variant:
|
|
|
|
With the WagonR, the ZXI variant’s 1.2L engine is the one to buy if you can. This engine offers superior performance for highway driving and better torque for city drivability. And all that comes without a compromise in terms of value for money or fuel efficiency. However, if you can stretch your budget a bit, then the higher ZXI Plus variant offers even better value for money. It’s worth noting though, that a good chunk of that value comes from features with high perceived cost such as touchscreen and alloy wheels. If you don’t value these features, then the ZXI is just fine.
Maruti WagonR Petrol ZXI vs ZXI Plus Variant — Price, Feature Comparison
The ZXI Plus top model of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR Rs. 47,500 more than the lower ZXI variant and it’s available with the same 1.2L petrol engine. It costs Rs. 7.0 lakh with the petrol-manual and Rs. 7.50 lakh with the petrol-automatic powertrain.

The top model of the WagonR gets the following additional features over the ZXI trim:
|
|
|

Because of a reasonable price gap over the lower trim and some features with high perceived cost, such as the touchscreen and alloy wheels, the ZXI Plus manages to offer the best value for money. If your budget permits, this variant is the one to buy as it offers a nice balance of must-have and good-to-have features. This is also our top recommendation for WagonR manual and automatic buyers.
Which Variant Of The Maruti Suzuki WagonR Petrol Should You Buy?
Let’s start the buying recommendation for the Maruti WagonR with the petrol-manual variants. The base model of the Wagon R misses out on several must-have features, which are available in the higher VXI variant. Moreover, the VXI variant more than justifies the incremental cost over the base variant. Still, we can’t outright recommend the VXI trim as the higher ZXI variant offers a more powerful 1.2L engine. You will not only appreciate the performance of this engine on the highways, but also the superior drivability it offers in the city. And you are neither compromising in terms of fuel economy nor in terms of value for money.
The top model of the Wagonr offers the best value for money with a good mix of good-to-have and must-have features. So, this is our top recommendation, which will suit most WagonR buyers.
Among the 3 automatic variants, the VXI 1.0L variant is a good option if you don’t intend to drive on the highways all that frequently. However, if you do, then the ZXI 1.2L variant is highly recommended since you’re getting this upgrade option with only a small increase in price. If budget is not a big constraint, then the ZXI Plus is a better option as it offers superior value. Although, some of that value comes from features with high perceived cost (e.g. alloy wheels, touchscreen).

Since the Celerio and WagonR use the same 1.0L CNG bi-fuel engine, their mileage figures and fuel costs are identical. In this price range, they also offer a decent power and torque output for city and occasional highway use. Whereas, Tiago offers the best power and torque output figures in the segment. The Tiago is also the only one offering an AMT automatic transmission option with the CNG powertrain.
