Although buyers have traditionally prefered a diesel engine in a large SUV, Toyota offers a petrol engine option as well. Sales of the petrol engine are negligible as diesel makes up for 99% of all Fortuner sales. Going forward, this may change as the price gap between petrol and diesel prices is getting narrower.

The Toyota Fortuner competes with other full-size 3-row SUVs like Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace and Ford Endeavour. This full-size SUV is a segment leader in its class. The Fortuner will soon get competition from the MG Gloster, which was on display at the Auto Expo 2020.
