BYD Dolphin Coming Soon?

The BYD Dolphin is a 4-door electric hatchback that is currently on sale in China, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and various other Asia-Pacific and European countries. The Dolphin is smaller than the Atto 3 SUV with a length of 4270mm, width of 1770mm and a height of 1570mm. It has a wheelbase of 2700mm and offers a 345-litre boot that’s expandable up to 1310 litres by folding the rear seats.

Depending on the market, the Dolphin is available with 2 ‘Blade’ LFP battery pack options – 44.9kWh and 60.48kWh. We expect BYD to offer the bigger battery pack in India, which would give the Dolphin a range of over 400km (427km WLTP) on a single charge. The Dolphin is powered by an electric motor mounted on the front axle and produces 204PS of power and 290Nm of torque.

In terms of design, the Dolphin is quite simplistic. It offers LED headlamps at the front, LED tail lamps at the rear, an optional dual-tone paint with a grey bonnet and roof, blacked-out pillars, aero-optimised wheels and 4 doors. Like the Atto 3, the interior of the Dolphin is quite funky.

A 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen takes centre stage and is flanked by round AC vents. The use of body coloured panels, lighter grey materials on the upper portion and dark grey down below makes the cabin look a bit busy. A digital instrument panel mounted on the steering column relays vital information such as speed, charge remaining, range, etc. to the driver.

We expect BYD to launch the Dolphin after the Seal EV, which is expected to launch in March-April. The BYD Dolphin is likely to be priced between Rs. 20.0 lakh - Rs. 25.0 lakh (ex-showroom) and could potentially rival the MG Z EV and the upcoming Tata Curvv EV and Maruti Suzuki eVX.

BYD Dolphin Mini: What Is It?

Currently, the BYD Dolphin featured above is the brand’s entry-level EV in several markets and there is no such model listed on their website. Hence, we think the Dolphin Mini could be an India-specific model that could slot below the Dolphin. We expect BYD to price the Dolphin Mini around Rs. 15.0 lakh to Rs. 20.0 lakh (ex-showroom) and take on the higher variants of the Tata Punch EV and Citroen eC3 in India.
