The Tata Punch is a small SUV for buyers who want compact dimensions, high ground clearance and a commanding driving position. The 2026 Punch facelift makes the package stronger with updated styling, more features, new powertrain options and a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating. The Punch is available with a 1.2L normal petrol engine with manual and AMT options, a 1.2L turbo petrol engine with manual transmission, and a CNG option with manual and AMT transmissions. The CNG-AMT is a major highlight, as it gives high-running buyers the convenience of 2-pedal driving. The Punch’s biggest strengths are its ride quality, highway stability, high 193mm ground clearance, safety rating and twin-cylinder CNG boot layout. However, buyers should also consider its average normal-petrol performance, heavy clutch, touch-based cabin controls and Tata’s inconsistent quality-control record.
The 2026 Tata Punch facelift gets a sharper design inspired by newer Tata SUVs and the Punch EV. The front now gets slimmer LED DRLs, redesigned headlamps, a cleaner grille and a tougher-looking bumper with more black cladding.
From the side, the Punch continues with its tall and upright stance. The 16-inch alloy wheels, squared-off wheel arches and 193mm ground clearance help it look more rugged than most hatchbacks and crossover-style rivals.
At the rear, the connected LED tail-lamps and updated bumper make the Punch look wider and more modern. The upright tailgate also helps preserve its small-SUV identity.
The Punch also continues to offer 90-degree opening doors, which make ingress and egress easier. This is useful for elderly passengers, child-seat installation and tight parking situation.
The Punch facelift gets a more modern cabin than before. Higher variants offer a 10.25-inch touchscreen, 7-inch digital driver’s display, 2-spoke steering wheel with backlit logo, wireless phone charger, rear AC vents, 65W USB-C charger, auto-dimming IRVM and a 360-degree camera with blind spot detection.
The seating position is upright and gives the driver a clear view of the bonnet edges. This makes the Punch easy to place in city traffic. The front seats are comfortable, and higher variants add features like extra thigh support and a front centre armrest. However, the lack of telescopic steering adjustment can make the driving position less comfortable for taller drivers.
The cabin has some usability issues. Tata have used touch-sensitive controls for many functions, including the AC panel and hazard warning switch. These controls look modern, but they are not as easy or safe to use while driving as physical buttons.
Rear-seat comfort is good for average-sized adults. The top variants get rear AC vents, a Type-C charging port, adjustable headrests, rear centre armrest and better thigh support.
Boot space is practical in the petrol variants, which offer 366L of luggage space. The CNG variants use Tata’s twin-cylinder layout and offer a flat 210L boot, which is far more usable than a conventional single-cylinder CNG setup. A firmer boot floor would have made the CNG boot feel neater, but the layout itself is a clear advantage.
The 1.2L normal petrol engine produces 88PS and 115Nm. It is suitable for city driving, and V3Cars’ earlier test of the normal petrol manual showed that engine noise and vibrations are well controlled for a 3-cylinder engine. However, the clutch is heavy for a petrol car, and the pedal spacing can trouble drivers with larger feet.
The normal petrol manual feels stable on the highway for a car of this size. In V3Cars’ tests, the pre-facelift Punch normal petrol manual returned 11.56kmpl in the city and 16.81kmpl on the highway. Since the normal petrol engine output remains unchanged in the facelift, these figures give a useful reference for expected real-world efficiency.
The new 1.2L turbo petrol engine is the biggest performance upgrade. It produces 120PS and 170Nm, and should suit buyers who want better highway performance and stronger overtaking ability. It is available with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Punch CNG produces 73.4PS and 103Nm in CNG mode. It is available with manual and AMT transmission options. In V3Cars’ test, the Punch CNG-AMT returned 28.32kmpkg, which is higher than its claimed efficiency of 26.99kmpkg.
The CNG-AMT is convenient, but it feels underpowered and the AMT shifts slowly. This makes it better suited to relaxed city commuting than quick driving. Paddle shifters are available in the top CNG-AMT variant, but they do not make the shifts meaningfully quicker.
Ride quality is one of the Punch’s strongest areas. The suspension is soft enough for bad roads, but the car still feels stable while cornering and at highway speeds. The Punch feels planted around 100kmph, and the steering and suspension setup give it a more confident feel than its size suggests.
The Tata Punch is one of the strongest small SUVs for buyers who want safety, ground clearance, ride comfort and a proper SUV-like seating position in a compact package. The 2026 facelift improves the formula with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, more features, 193mm ground clearance, a turbo petrol option and a CNG-AMT option.
It is not perfect. The normal petrol engine is not exciting, the manual clutch is heavy, the CNG-AMT is best driven calmly, and the touch-sensitive cabin controls are not user-friendly while driving. Tata’s quality-control and service consistency should also remain a consideration for buyers.
For most Punch petrol, AMT and CNG buyers, the Pure Plus variant is our top recommendation. Buyers who want more modern features can consider the Adventure variant, while the Accomplished and Accomplished Plus S variants make sense for those who want feel-good features. For turbo petrol buyers, the Adventure variant offers the more sensible balance of performance and price.
