8th-Gen BMW 5 Series Revealed With Petrol And Electric Powertrains | V3Cars

BMW have revealed the 8th-gen 5 Series and it gets an all-electric powertrain for the first time. The new 5 Series will go on sale globally later this year, followed by the India launch sometime in early 2024.

While the last 5 Series featured a rather stately design, the new sedan gets an aggressive design with a shark nose-inspired kidney grille. It has also grown in size over its predecessor. The new 5 series is 97mm longer, 32mm wider and 36mm taller than the model it replaces. Its wheelbase has also increased by 20mm, now measuring 2995mm. Furthermore, the design of the 5 Series now falls in line with the larger 7 Series and BMW’s iX range of electric cars with flowing curves and a flat shoulderline.

The front end now features an illuminated kidney grille that come with air ducts in the ICE variants. The all-electric i5, on the other hand, features a closed off grille to aid aerodynamics. Around the side, the new 5 Series gets a flat stance along with flush-fitting door handles. At the rear, the new 5 Series now features slim LED tail lights that are joined by a chrome strip. Furthermore, the M Sport variants also add sportier bumpers and gloss black inserts all around.

Step inside the new 5 Series and you will notice the cabin borrows several design influences from the larger 7 Series. It gets a curved binnacle on top of the dashboard that houses a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment system. The latter offers wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with BMW’s virtual assistant. With the 8th-gen model, BMW have minimised the use of physical buttons by incorporating most of the functions into the head unit. Like the 7 Series, the new 5 Series also features hidden AC vents and prominent ambient lighting on the dashboard and door cards.

2024 BMW 5 Series Powertrain Details

The 2024 5 Series offers updated powertrains featuring mild-hybrid support. The 2.0L turbo petrol engine in the 520i produces 208PS of power and 330Nm of torque, out of which 18PS and 20Nm comes from the mild-hybrid system. The new 5 Series also gets the updated 2.0L turbo diesel engine, which now puts out 197PS of power and 400Nm of torque. The diesel variants can be had with a rear-wheel drivetrain or 4-wheel-drive. Furthermore, BMW will also offer plug-in-hybrid models with 2.0L and 3.0L petrol engines named the 530e and 550e.

2024 BMW i5 Powertrain Details

As we stated earlier, the 5 Series now offers all-electric powertrains for the first time – i5 eDrive40 and i50 M50 xDrive. The i50 eDrive40 uses a 81.2kWh battery pack which channels power to a rear-mounted electric motor. The electric motor produces 340PS of power and 430Nm of torque and it propels the sedan from 0-100kmph in 6 seconds. The i50 M50 xDrive, on the other hand, uses 2 electric motors mounted at each axle. It offers 601PS of power and 820Nm of torque. The M50 is capable of sprinting from standstill to 100kmph in 3.8 seconds. In terms of driving range, the i5 eDrive40 and i5 M50 xDrive offer a WLTP-certified range of up to 582km and 516km, respectively.
