After revealing the production version of the EV9 electric SUV, Kia have unveiled the new EV5 electric SUV concept. The production version of the new EV5 will go on sale in China later this year.

The Kia EV5 electric SUV previews the production model, which will go on sale in China later this year. Kia showcased the EV5 at the Chinese EV Day and announced their foray into the Chinese EV market. The EV5 is based on Kia’s ‘Opposite United’ design philosophy and it takes multiple cues from the Kia EV9.

Up front, the Kia EV5 gets a flat grille, which Kia call their ‘Digital Tiger Face’. It gets sleek LED DRLs wrapping the whole front end whereas the production spec model could also boast vertical LED headlights — like the EV9. Around the side, the EV5 gets accentuated wheel arches with black cladding and 21-inch alloy wheels. It also gets a flowing glass house, which tilts upwards around the C-pillar. At the rear, the EV5 gets C-shaped LED tail lights, which seamlessly merge with the Kia logo in the middle.

In terms of interior, the Kia EV5 is far off from what the production version could look like. It gets a flat dashboard that houses the twin-connected screens. We get to see a similar connected binnacle in the EV6 and EV9 electric SUVs. It also gets a large panoramic sunroof, which also houses solar cells to recharge the batteries.

Kia are yet to reveal the powertrain details of the new EV5. We expect it to share its battery and motors with the EV6 electric crossover. Kia offer 2 drivetrain options with the EV6 — rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. The rear-wheel-drive EV6 produces 229PS of power whereas the all-wheel-drive version puts out 325PS of power and 605Nm of torque.

Kia India have confirmed an all-electric model for our market by 2025. Kia could use the MPV (RV) bodystyle for their upcoming electric model and it could sit above the Kia Carens. Currently, Kia offer the EV6 electric crossover in India as their only EV offering and it comes via the CBU route.
