Maruti Suzuki Baleno Petrol - Dimensions Comparison

The Baleno is the longest in its class of premium hatchbacks and it would’ve been the widest too, beaten only by the Tata Altroz. It has a respectable boot size of 339 litres. Its wheelbase, though, is about 5cm shorter than the i20’s, which has the longest wheelbase but the smallest boot.

The Sigma variant is the base variant of the Baleno. It gets standard safety features like 2 airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, ABS and rear parking sensors. It has tilt steering, front and rear 12V socket, manual AC, front power windows, body-coloured handles, bumpers and outside mirrors and LED tail lamps.

Although it’s a good package, we’d suggest you stretch your budget and get the Delta variant. Why do we say so? Well, you’ll have to read the Delta variant’s description.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Petrol - Delta Variant

The Delta variant is Rs. 78,000 more expensive than the Sigma variant. For that price, you get additional safety features like LED projector headlamps, rear wiper, washer and defogger. On the entertainment side, you get a Bluetooth/USB music system with steering-mounted controls. The functional features of the Delta variant include a remote central locking, automatic AC, electrically-folding and adjustable outside mirrors, rear power windows, adjustable rear headrests, 60/40 split rear seatbacks while the style aspect is covered with chrome front grill accent and wheel covers.

    Maruti Suzuki Baleno Exterior

If you want to buy an automatic transmission, then this is the most affordable variant of the Baleno that gets the CVT automatic. The automatic is Rs. 1.32 lakh more expensive.

The Delta variant is also available with the hybrid petrol engine. It has 7PS of extra power and its hybrid system offers better fuel efficiency and drivability at city speeds. But, this hybrid tech adds almost Rs. 90,000 to the ex-showroom cost and we don’t think it’s worth that much. So, we’d suggest you skip the hybrid engine altogether.

This is a far better package than the Sigma variant, and you should consider this if you can afford. But if you can afford a higher variant, then stay with us as we explore the Zeta variant of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno petrol.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Petrol - Zeta Variant

The Zeta variant adds Rs. 61,300 to the ex-showroom price. For the added sum, you get front fog lamps, touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, keyless entry and push-button start/stop, telescopic steering adjustment, auto-dimming inside mirror, front armrest, footwell, glovebox and boot illumination and 16-inch alloy wheels with wider, 195-section tyres.

    Maruti Suzuki Baleno Exterior

The upgrade is easily justifiable and you should absolutely get the Zeta variant, even if you have the money for the Alpha variant.

Once again, we’d suggest you avoid the overpriced hybrid engine option but you can buy the Zeta automatic if you want it.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Petrol - Alpha Variant

The Alpha variant adds another Rs. 60,300 to the ex-showroom price. In addition to what the Zeta variant gets, the Alpha variant adds features like automatic headlamps, UV-resistant glasses and reverse parking camera. In our opinion, these features aren’t worth the asking price. So, you should instead just go with the Zeta variant.

    Maruti Suzuki Baleno Interior

Same advice goes for the Alpha automatic. Buy the Zeta automatic instead of Alpha, as it offers much better value than the higher variant.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Variants - Final Verdict

The Sigma variant and Delta variants are both worth alright but you should buy them only if you can’t stretch your budget any more. The Zeta variant offers a tonne of value and is the top recommended variant to go for. Same goes for the automatic transmission - buy the Delta variant if you can’t afford Zeta - but avoid the Alpha variant.

We’d suggest you skip the hybrid engine option available in the Delta and Zeta variants. The Rs. 90,000 price increase over comparable non-hybrid variant means that it’ll take you almost Rs. 2,00,000km to recover the costs. That’s assuming a litre of petrol costs Rs. 80.0 and your car delivers the advertised fuel efficiency. If you want better drivability and longer fuel top-up intervals, then you should buy the Toyota Glanza G hybrid. It’s similarly equipped as the Baleno Zeta and costs just Rs. 24,000 more than the non-hybrid variant. With the Glanza hybrid, it’ll only take you about 50,000km to recover the additional ex-showroom cost.
