Last week, our source close to MG with knowledge of the matter confirmed that the carmaker is developing a new electric SUV for the Indian market. While details are not known at the moment, the upcoming MG EV could be a potential rival to the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400. MG are likely to price this upcoming electric SUV quite aggressively, so much so that we expect it to cost between Rs. 10.0 lakh to Rs. 15.0 lakh range, similar to the Tata Punch EV.

While the exact platform and powertrain specifications of the upcoming MG electric SUV are not known at the moment, we expect it to share components with the Comet EV and its sibling, the Baojun Yep eSUV.
MG’s parent company that owns the Baojun brand recently revealed the Yep 5-door SUV. It shares its platform with the Comet EV but it is larger in every dimension.
The Baojun Yep 5-door measures just under 4000mm long,1760mm wide, 1726mm tall and it has a wheelbase of 2560mm. In comparison, the Nexon EV is 3994mm long, 1811mm wide and 1616mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 2498mm.
We expect the upcoming MG electric SUV to get a larger battery pack than the Comet EV, which comes with a 17.3kWh battery. We expect it to have a capacity of 30 - 40kWh and offer a driving range of 400km on a full charge. The Nexon EV, in comparison, offers 2 battery pack options that offer a claimed range of 325km (30kWh) and 465km (41kWh), respectively.

MG Motor India and their new partner, the JSW Group, will hold a joint event on March 20, where we expect the carmaker to announce their future roadmap. For now, MG Motor have confirmed 2 new cars for India – the MG Gloster facelift and a new EV. Considering nearly 25 percent of all MG vehicles sold in the country are EVs, we could expect MG Motor to launch more electric vehicles in India in the near future to establish a strong foundation in the Indian electric vehicle segment.
While MG Motor have been on the backfoot for the last couple of years due to geopolitical tensions between India and China, JSW’s acquisition of a 35 percent stake in MG Motor India could help the carmaker accelerate their growth in India once again.
