MG Motor India are currently developing a new MG electric SUV. Our source close to MG with knowledge of the matter has revealed the new MG eSUV will rival the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400. The launch timeline for the upcoming MG eSUV is not known at the moment.

New MG Electric SUV

New MG Electric SUV In Rs. 10.0 Lakh - Rs. 20.0 Lakh Price Band

While EVs currently constitute just 2 percent of all passenger vehicles sold in India, industry insiders suggest sales of electric vehicles will grow significantly in the coming years. Nearly 25 percent of all MG vehicles sold in the country are EVs. So it comes as no surprise that MG want to capitalise on this trend and target one of the best-selling EVs in India that is the Tata Nexon EV.

The upcoming MG electric SUV could feature similar dimensions as the Baojun Yep 5-door that was unveiled recently. So we can expect MG to price it anywhere between the Rs. 10.0 lakh to Rs. 20.0 lakh mark where SUVs such as the Tata Punch EV, Nexon EV and XUV400 compete for buyer’s attention.

For reference, the Tata Punch EV costs between Rs. 11.0 lakh to Rs. 15.5 lakh while the Nexon EV costs between Rs. 14.5 lakh and Rs. 19.45 lakh. The Mahindra XUV400 is priced between Rs. 15.5 lakh and Rs. 17.5 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). Considering the aggressive price tag of the Comet EV and ZS EV, we could expect MG to price their upcoming electric SUV competitively to take on the best-selling Nexon EV.

Upcoming MG eSUV Platform And Powertrain Specs

While the exact platform and powertrain specifications of the upcoming MG electric SUV are not known at the moment, we expect it to share components with the Comet EV and its sibling, the Baojun Yep eSUV.

MG’s parent company that owns the Baojun brand recently revealed the Yep 5-door SUV. It shares its platform with the Comet EV but it is larger in every dimension.

The Baojun Yep 5-door measures just under 4000mm long,1760mm wide, 1726mm tall and it has a wheelbase of 2560mm. In comparison, the Nexon EV is 3994mm long, 1811mm wide and 1616mm tall. It has a wheelbase of 2498mm.

The upcoming MG electric SUV will get a larger battery pack than the Comet EV, which gets a 17.3kWh battery. We expect it to have a capacity of 30 - 40kWh and offer a driving range of 400km on a full charge. The Nexon EV, in comparison, offers 2 battery pack options that offer a claimed range of 325km (30kWh) and 465km (41kWh), respectively.

V3Cars Insight

The launch timeline for the new MG electric SUV is not known at the moment. If the upcoming MG SUV shares its platform and powertrain with the Baojun Yep, we expect MG to price it between Rs. 10.0 lakh to Rs. 15.0 lakh, similar to the Tata Punch EV. Based on the information we have currently, we expect the MG electric SUV to rival the Punch EV while offering dimensions and space similar to the Nexon EV.
