Tata Nexon Diesel Variant - Engine Specs
The Tata Nexon’s 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine makes 110PS of power and 260Nm of torque. These figures put it near the top of the list falling only behind the Mahindra XUV300. This engine is available with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AMT automatic - again, on par with the XUV300. While its power and torque figures are hovering close to the top of the segment, its fuel efficiency figures are almost at the bottom - second only to the XUV300.

2019 Tata Nexon BS4 Diesel Variant - Dimension Comparison
In terms of dimensions, the Nexon is again the second widest in its class. Its boot space is comparable with the segment leader WR-V.
It has the shortest wheelbase in the segment but it makes up for with the best-in-class ground clearance. Combine those two attributes and you have a sub-compact SUV that can go over obstacles that its competitors can only dream of.
A high ground clearance makes it easy to go over tall speed breakers. A shorter wheelbase improves the break-over angle further and makes it better prepared to handle the abuse Indian roads throw at us every day. This characteristic of the Nexon is the polar opposite of the XUV300, which has the longest wheelbase and the lowest ground clearance.

2019 Tata Nexon BS4 Diesel XE Variant - Top Recommended
The well-priced base XE variant of the Tata Nexon gets the standard suite of safety kit like 2 front airbags, ABS and rear parking sensors along with ISOFIX child seat anchors, multiple driving modes, front power windows, tilt steering, body-coloured bumpers and door cladding. This is our top recommended variant because it has the best-in-class ground clearance, a powerful diesel engine and multiple driving modes - all for the lowest price in the segment. Just add an aftermarket music system, some wheel covers and a day/night inside mirror and you’re good to go. That is if you have a hard time paying way too much for things you need.
Why the other variants aren’t as highly recommended as XE? Read on to find out.

2019 Tata Nexon BS4 Diesel XM Variant - Not Recommended
The XM variant adds Rs. 75,000 to the price tag and that gets you a Harman 4-speaker music system with Bluetooth and USB, steering-mounted controls, rear power windows, electrically-adjustable outside mirrors, remote central locking and wheel covers.
We do not think these features should cost Rs. 75,000. You are probably better off accessorizing the XE variant and saving some cash on the side instead of upgrading to the XM variant.

2019 Tata Nexon BS4 Diesel XMA (Automatic) Variant - Buy Only If You Want Nexon Diesel Automatic
The Nexon’s diesel engine is only available with the automatic in certain variants. XM is one of those and the price difference is massive for an AMT. The XM automatic is Rs. 70,000 more expensive than the XM manual. Rs. 50 - 60,000 price premium is pretty much the norm for AMT automatics and the Nexon automatic is a fair bit more expensive than that. Not to mention, it’s already available with a variant that’s overpriced considering the features it offers over XE.
Similar is the story with the Kraz automatic. Go for it only if you can’t resist that black body with orange bits sprinkled on it. They’re not offering as much value as the XE variant.
2019 Tata Nexon BS4 Diesel Kraz Variant - Not Recommended
The Nexon Kraz is based on the XM and is Rs. 14,000 more expensive. For that price, you get black body colour, dual-tone roof, orange accents in wheel covers, front grille, seat covers and AC vents, orange outside mirrors and glossy black dashboard. Go for it if you want the Nexon in the black shade since black colour is exclusively available with the Kraz variant and you can’t get it with any other variant.

2019 Tata Nexon BS4 Diesel XT Plus Variant - Not Recommended
The 2019 Nexon diesel XT Plus variant is about another Rs. 63,000 dearer over the XM variant. The additional features include projector headlamps, fog lamps, 4 extra speakers, rear AC vents, electrically-foldable outside mirrors, cooled and illuminated glove box, LED DRLs and body-coloured door handles and outside mirrors.
In our opinion, these features are worth about Rs. 35 - 40,000. Our estimation puts it nowhere near the Rs. 63,000 asking price Tata has put on it. Not to mention, this variant has to also pick up the slack of the XM variant, which itself is grossly overpriced. Adding up the features of the XM and XT Plus variant just doesn’t seem worth Rs. 1.38 lakh (the price difference between XE and XT Plus).
So, it’s very, very difficult for us to recommend this variant to the value-conscious buyers.

2019 Tata Nexon BS4 Diesel XZ Variant - Not Recommended
At Rs. 9.5 lakh, the XZ variant of the 2019 Tata Nexon is another Rs. 53,000 or so more expensive than the XT Plus variant. That brings the total to about Rs. 1.9 lakh compared to the XE variant.
The XZ trim adds a 7-inch touchscreen music system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay - something you can get from the aftermarket for well under Rs. 25,000. It gets a day/night inside mirror - a feature that should be standard on all variants of the Nexon but is sadly reserved for only the top two variants. Thankfully, it’s an easy, affordable and a must-have upgrade, which should cost you about Rs. 1,000. The XZ gets a reverse parking camera, which you can add to the XE variant for no more than Rs. 5,000.
If the features XZ offers over the base XE variant seem like they’re worth even Rs. 1.5 lakh, we would’ve recommended this variant. But, it just doesn’t add up. So, you’re better off skipping this variant as well.

2019 Tata Nexon BS4 Diesel XZ Plus Variant - Not Recommended
The Nexon diesel XZ Plus is another Rs. 70,000 more expensive at Rs. 10.19 lakh. For that sum, you’re getting rear defogger, front and rear armrest, 60-40 split rear seats, keyless entry with push-button start, automatic AC, dual-tone roof and 16-inch alloy wheels.
While it does somewhat justify the Rs. 70,000 price jump over the XZ variant, it doesn’t even come close to making up for the big price gaps created by the lower XM, XT Plus and XZ variants. It’s another variant of the Nexon diesel that we can’t recommend as it doesn’t offer great value.

2019 Tata Nexon BS4 Diesel XZA Plus (Automatic) Variant - Not Recommended
Just like the Nexon XMA, the XZA also adds about Rs. 70,000 over the comparable XZ manual variant and costs Rs. 10.9 lakh. It’s another grossly overpriced piece of kit on offer. Since this is the only other automatic variant, if you want your Nexon diesel automatic to have some creature comfort features, we’d say you should take it. But know that it’s far from great value.
Which Tata Nexon Diesel Variant is Best?
This variant breakdown clears things a lot for all of us. The Nexon has a very attractive starting price tag and a few unique features too. But once you start climbing up the variant ladder to reasonably equip your Nexon, the price jumps become unjustifiably bigger.
The Nexon’s notable strengths are available in all variants right from the base XE trim. It has the best ground clearance, a powerful engine and multiple driving modes. Since you’re getting these even in the XE variant, it makes more financial sense to just get the XE variant. Then you can customize and equip it with features to suit your needs and wants and save a lot of cash in the process.
If you want an automatic transmission, then there’s no easy way to sugarcoat it. You just have to swallow that bitter 1.45 lakh rupee pill and get the XMA variant.
