The Hyundai Bayon HX8 CVT and Renault Duster Techno Plus DCT are both petrol-automatic SUVs priced around Rs. 16.5 lakh. We’ve selected these variants because just Rs. 15,100 separates them, making them direct alternatives for the same budget. The Bayon offers ventilated front seats, a powered driver seat and a 360-degree camera. The Duster counters with 48PS more power, a larger digital instrument cluster and a powered tailgate. Which SUV offers a better package for your money?

The Bayon HX8 CVT costs Rs. 16,53,900, while the Duster Techno Plus DCT costs Rs. 16,69,000. Here’s how their ex-showroom prices compare:
*The Bayon’s price is introductory.
With just Rs. 15,100 separating these variants, the Hyundai Bayon and Renault Duster offer different strengths at this budget. The Bayon HX8 CVT gets ventilated front seats and a 360-degree camera, while the Duster Techno Plus DCT offers 48PS more power.
Both variants already cover many everyday requirements. Their main shared features are grouped below:
Both SUVs therefore offer a panoramic sunroof, cruise control and an electric parking brake with auto hold.
The meaningful equipment differences are:
The Bayon’s advantages focus on seating comfort and parking convenience. Ventilated front seats, powered driver-seat adjustment and rear-seat recline can improve everyday comfort. Its 360-degree camera also provides more views than the Duster’s rear-view camera.
The Duster counters with dual-zone AC, an auto-dimming mirror, a powered tailgate and blind-spot warning. Its larger instrument display is another clear difference, although screen size alone shouldn’t be a factor.
Both SUVs have 4-cylinder petrol engines and automatic transmissions. However, the Bayon uses a larger non-turbo engine, while the Duster gets a turbocharged engine.
Their specifications highlight the difference:
The Duster produces 48PS more power and 136Nm more torque. Its peak torque also arrives at much lower RPM. On paper, this makes it the stronger option for buyers who frequently overtake or travel with passengers and luggage.
Despite the substantial difference in engine output, their claimed fuel efficiency figures are very close.
Delhi’s petrol price is Rs. 102.12/litre as of writing this comparison. Using this price and the claimed mileage figures gives the following monthly fuel expenses:
Costs and savings are rounded independently to the nearest rupee. These calculations use claimed mileage; actual expenses depend on the mileage achieved.
At 1500km per month, the Bayon’s theoretical saving is around Rs. 800 per year. That is too small to make fuel cost the deciding factor.
The Duster is longer and taller, while the width difference is just 5mm. Its wheelbase and ground clearance are also greater.
Here’s the dimensional comparison:
#Hyundai claim a 505L boot capacity for the Bayon with no spare tyre fitted. The HX8 CVT comes with a spare tyre, and Hyundai have not published its boot capacity separately.
The Duster has the advantage in exterior size and offers a substantial boot. The Bayon comes with a spare tyre, which is a practical advantage on long journeys. The Duster’s repair kit can seal some small tread punctures, but it cannot repair sidewall cuts or major tyre damage.
The Duster has 5-star Bharat NCAP ratings for both adult and child occupant protection. The India-spec Bayon currently has no published Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP rating. Hyundai describe it as engineered for 5-star Indian safety standards.
Their standard warranties compare as follows:
The Duster’s standard warranty ends when either limit is reached. Renault’s Forever programme can extend coverage up to 7 years or 1,50,000km, subject to servicing and renewal conditions. The Bayon’s unlimited-kilometre standard warranty is more useful if you exceed 1,00,000km within 3 years.
The Renault Duster Techno Plus DCT is our pick at these prices. Its Rs. 15,100 premium brings substantially higher engine output, larger exterior dimensions and useful features such as a powered tailgate and dual-zone AC. Its published 5-star Bharat NCAP ratings add independent crash-test assurance to the package.
The Hyundai Bayon HX8 CVT remains worth choosing if ventilated seats, powered driver-seat adjustment, rear-seat recline and a 360-degree camera are priorities. These are useful features you’ll experience regularly, and the Duster Techno Plus doesn’t offer them.
For buyers without those specific equipment requirements, the Duster’s engine advantage makes its small premium easier to justify.
