Mahindra continue to test the Thar 5 Door ahead of its launch and one of our readers recently spotted testing the SUV. The Thar 5 Door was recently spotted testing in Leh and the latest spy shots were captured within the confines of the city. Let’s take a look.

The latest spy shots of the Thar 5 Door reveal a few key interesting details over the Thar 3 Door. Apart from the increased length and extra set of doors, the most obvious change in the new spy shots are the Thar 5 Door’s LED projector headlamps and LED fog lamps. In comparison, the Thar 3 Door offers halogen headlamps and fog lamps even in its top-spec variant. The previous spy shots showed the revamped 6-slot vertical grille on the Thar 5 Door. At the rear, the latest Thar 5 Door test mule features the same tail lamps as the Thar 3 Door while the one spotted in Leh featured a different taillamp graphic. The taillamps are likely to feature bulb-type illumination while the turn indicators could use LED elements.

Previous spy shots of the Thar 5 Door also revealed a few interior details, such as a new steering wheel borrowed from the XUV700, and a larger touchscreen infotainment system as well. These new features are likely to make the Thar 5 Door feel more upmarket than its 3 Door sibling.
Apart from the new touchscreen infotainment system, the new Thar 5 Door is also likely to offer a lot more creature comfort features over the Thar 3 Door. These features could include front and rear armrests, an updated instrument cluster, rear AC vents, automatic climate control, and a reverse parking camera.

The new Thar 5 door is likely to offer the following set of features:

In terms of powertrains, we expect the new Thar 5 Door to retain the same 2.2L turbo diesel and the 2.0L turbo petrol engine options as the Thar 3 Door. However, both engines could offer more power and torque than the Thar 3 Door to overcome the extra weight. Both engine options are likely to come with manual and automatic transmission options along with 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. In the Scorpio N, the 2.2L turbo diesel engine comes in 2 states of tune — 130PS and 175PS. We expect Mahindra to offer the Thar 5 Door diesel with the higher power output while the Thar 5 Door petrol is expected to produce 200PS of power from its 2.0L turbo petrol engine.

While earlier rumours suggested Mahindra are planning to launch the Thar 5 door by the end of 2023, a spokesperson for the brand confirmed it will only go on sale in 2024. Hence, it is safe to say that Mahindra could reveal the Thar 5 door in early 2024 and launch it soon after. The new Thar 5 door will not have any direct rivals, save for the Force Gurkha 5 door, which is also slated for a 2024 launch.
