Hyundai have introduced usage-based insurance for owners of Bluelink-connected cars across their range. It lets insurance companies offer up to 15 percent off the own-damage premium at renewal, depending on the car’s driving score on the Bluelink app.

Insurance companies can consider factors such as the car’s value and claims history when pricing own-damage cover. Usage-based insurance adds information about how the car is used by an owner. Depending on the policy, that can include how many kilometres the car covers, how it’s driven or both. Hyundai’s programme uses driving behaviour to assess whether an owner could get a discount at renewal.
Bluelink works out the score using data the car recorded over the previous 3 months. It looks at rapid acceleration, sudden slowing, hard braking, speed control and idling. The car’s built-in Bluelink system supplies the data, so owners can use the equipment already fitted to their car.
If your Hyundai is connected to Bluelink and your insurance is due for renewal in the next 90 days, you can check your driving score in the app. A score of 70 or above makes you eligible for consideration. The insurance company decides whether to offer a discount. If your score is below 70, the app offers driving tips to help you improve it.
You can choose to share your score in the app. Hyundai India Insurance Broking then passes it to insurance companies after you give your consent. The 3 insurers taking part at the launch of this programme are Cholamandalam MS General Insurance, Go Digit General Insurance and ICICI Lombard General Insurance.
The 15 percent maximum applies to the own-damage premium, the part you pay to insure your car against damage or theft. A comprehensive renewal quote also includes third-party cover and can include add-ons.
For example, say your renewal quote is Rs. 20,000 before tax, including Rs. 10,000 for own-damage cover. At the maximum discount, you’d save Rs. 1,500. That works out to 7.5 percent of the total pre-tax premium.
You can check your Bluelink score or share it for a quote and still renew with the insurance company of your choice, directly or through a broker. If a participating insurance company offers you a discount, compare its final premium with what other insurers charge for the same insured value, cover and add-ons.
