Hyundai will launch the Bayon CNG in January 2027, expanding the SUV’s powertrain lineup beyond petrol-manual and petrol-CVT options. The CNG version is expected to use the existing 1.5L engine, with lower power and torque outputs. For buyers considering it, the price premium, luggage space and variant-wise features will matter alongside mileage. Here’s what we know and what to expect from the upcoming Hyundai Bayon CNG.

The Bayon CNG is expected to use a modified version of the petrol model’s 1.5L, 4-cylinder, non-turbo engine. For reference, this engine produces 115PS and 144Nm in the petrol Bayon, which offers a 6-speed manual transmission and a CVT automatic.
Running on CNG is likely to reduce its power and torque outputs. However, Hyundai haven’t announced either figure or the CNG version’s claimed mileage. Here’s how the petrol Bayon’s specifications compare with the details awaited for the CNG version:
A 6-speed manual transmission is the expected choice. While the petrol Bayon offers a petrol-automatic (CVT), Hyundai haven’t announced a CNG-automatic option.
The Bayon CNG is expected to get an underbody-mounted cylinder arrangement. This would keep the cylinder outside the main luggage compartment, helping preserve space for bags. However, Hyundai haven’t published the final tank layout, cylinder count or capacity. A twin-cylinder setup therefore remains a possibility rather than a confirmed feature.

For the CNG version, we still need confirmation of the usable boot capacity, spare-wheel provision and ground clearance. An underbody cylinder could improve luggage practicality, but it doesn’t establish that the CNG model will retain the full 505L boot space figure of the Bayon petrol.
The Maruti Victoris provides a useful pricing benchmark for the Bayon CNG. Both compete in the C-segment, and the Bayon CNG is expected to use a 1.5L engine, similar in capacity to the Victoris.
The table below compares the prices of the Maruti Victoris petrol-manual and CNG variants:
We expect the Bayon CNG to command a premium of around Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 1.2 lakh over an equivalent petrol-manual variant.
If Hyundai offer CNG in the base HX2 variant, that estimate would suggest a starting price of approximately Rs. 11.0 lakh to Rs. 11.2 lakh, ex-showroom. This assumes the petrol HX2 retains its current introductory price of Rs. 10 lakh. The starting price would be higher if CNG availability begins with another variant.
Hyundai haven’t announced which Bayon variants will receive the CNG powertrain. Its availability will determine whether buyers can combine lower fuel costs with features such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats or a 360-degree camera.
The current petrol range provides the following reference for feature availability:
A broader CNG lineup would give buyers more choice than restricting the powertrain to lower variants. However, equipment fitted to the petrol Bayon’s higher variants shouldn’t be assumed for the CNG version until Hyundai reveal its feature list.
Hyundai haven’t announced the Bayon CNG’s mileage. Its main C1-segment SUV rivals offer claimed figures ranging from 26.6kmpkg to 27.02kmpkg.
The Victoris, Grand Vitara and Hyryder share Maruti Suzuki’s 1.5L CNG engine. The Bayon CNG is expected to introduce Hyundai’s own 1.5L powertrain to this market. Its mileage, pricing and variant-wise features will determine how competitive an alternative it becomes.
The Bayon CNG is worth keeping on your shortlist if you drive substantial distances and have convenient access to CNG stations. The January 2027 launch should establish whether its pricing, features and luggage space suit your requirements.
The purchase decision should also account for how long fuel savings take to recover the CNG version’s higher upfront cost. That calculation needs the final price premium and mileage figures, along with fuel prices in your city.
Buyers who require an automatic transmission should wait for an official announcement, as Hyundai haven’t confirmed that option for the Bayon CNG.
