Toyota To Launch New SUV To Bridge Gap Between Hyryder And Fortuner | V3Cars

According to our source close to the development, Toyota are currently developing a new SUV, which is likely to launch in India within the next 18 months. Toyota’s latest SUV is expected to fill the gap between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Fortuner SUVs.

Toyota currently offer 2 SUVs in India – the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Fortuner. The Hyryder, which is based on the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara C-SUV, is priced between Rs. 11.14 - Rs. 20.19 lakh, while the Toyota Fortuner is priced from Rs. 33.43 - 51.44 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). Meanwhile, the Innova Hycross MPV sits in between the 2 SUVs with a price tag ranging from Rs. 18.92 - 30.68 lakh.

Considering the popularity of SUVs in India, the Innova Hycross features several SUV styling cues over its predecessor’s MPV design. Thanks to elements like an imposing grille, and upright bonnet and tailgate, the Hycross looks butch, especially when compared to rivals like the Mahindra XUV700. However, the Innova nameplate has long been associated with MPVs or people carriers, which limits its reach in the SUV buyer’s mindspace. Therefore, a new 3-row SUV based on the same platform as the Hyryder could offer an alternative to buyers looking for a D1-segment SUV.

Upcoming Toyota SUV Potential Rivals

Reports in the past have indicated Toyota and Maruti Suzuki’s plan to launch 3-row versions of their C-segment SUVs. The new SUVs are likely to offer an identical wheelbase and similar styling as their 2-row versions. However, they could gain a longer rear overhang to accommodate the 3rd-row seats, similar to what we’ve seen with other D1-segment 3-row SUVs.

While the Hyryder measures 4365mm in length, we could expect the upcoming 3-row Toyota SUV to exceed the 4600mm mark, which would put it up against SUVs like the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari and the MG Hector Plus.

Toyota’s upcoming Safari and XUV700 rival could feature either the Hyryder’s 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid or Innova Hycross’ 2.0-litre normal petrol or petrol-hybrid engine. In comparison, the Mahindra XUV700 offers the choice of a 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine, while the Safari and MG Hector Plus come with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. The Hector Plus additionally offers a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine as well.

We could expect the 3-row Toyota SUV to cost between Rs. 19.0 lakh to Rs. 26.0 lakh (ex-showroom), which would position it in between the Toyota Fortuner and normal petrol variants of the Innova Hycross.
