Just because it’s a Scorpio N doesn’t mean you should blindly buy it with a diesel engine. In this Mahindra Scorpio N Powertrains Explained article, we will go over the specs of each engine-transmission-drivetrain combination to help you pick the one that best matches your driving requirements.

Petrol vs Diesel — Fuel Type Differences
First, you need to decide if you want the Scorpio N with a petrol or diesel engine. Both fuels are inherently very different.
Petrol is a spirit, it’s lighter and evaporates in the air much more easily than diesel. On the other hand, diesel is oil. It is heavier and it doesn't evaporate as easily. Petrol, at the same ambient temperatures, evaporates at least 50 times faster than diesel. And even faster depending on the atmospheric pressure, winds and surface area of fuel exposed to air.
A petrol engine has spark plugs to perfectly time its combustion. As the piston approaches the top-dead-center position, a spark from the spark plug ignites the fuel air mixture. Petrol also has a much narrower range of compression ratios and fuel-air mixtures ratios that it can handle for reliable and consistent combustion. Therefore, a petrol engine primarily depends on the air intake to generate higher or lower performance, depending on the driving requirements.
In ambient temperatures of, say, 5C, a high displacement petrol engine, such as the Scorpio N’s 2.0L turbo petrol, takes about 10-15 minutes of gentle driving to get to its optimum operating temperature. That’s when the oil is warm and less viscous, the piston rings have had time to expand and improve their seal against the cylinder wall and the fuel vaporises more easily for a cleaner combustion.
A diesel engine burns the fuel-air mixture by compressing the air so hard that it achieves diesel's auto-ignition point. At that moment, just a little spray of diesel is enough to continue and sustain consistent combustion in an engine. Diesel has a much higher energy density — about 18% higher than E20 petrol. And therefore, one litre of diesel will drive the car much farther than one litre of Ethanol-blended petrol, assuming they are both delivering similar performance in the test.
Diesel fuel prefers high compression so that the air temperature is higher than the diesel’s auto-ignition temperature. It can also handle a much wider range of fuel-air mixture ratios than petrol. For instant power delivery a diesel engine does not depend as much on the air intake. It can produce on-demand power just by spraying in more diesel into the combustion chambers.
A turbo diesel engine of a comparable displacement of around 2.2L takes about 20-30 minutes of gentle driving in 5C ambient temperatures to achieve its operating temperature where it is most efficient.
Just driving a lot doesn’t make a diesel engine more suitable for you. Consider the following points before selecting the right fuel for your Scorpio N.
The Mahindra Scorpio N is available in 7 variants. The petrol-manual powertrain is available in 5 of those 7 variants, with prices ranging from Rs. 13.69 lakh to Rs. 21.69 lakh. You have the option of buying the Scorpio N petrol with an automatic transmission in 4 out of these 5 variants.
The diesel-manual two-wheel drive powertrain is available in all 7 variants, with prices starting from Rs. 14.19 lakh and going up to 22.47 lakh. There is an option of automatic transmission with the diesel 2WD powertrain in all but the base variant with ex-showroom prices ranging from Rs. 17.68 lakh to Rs. 23.99 lakh.
4WD is only available with the diesel engine in 3 diesel-manual variants and 2 diesel-automatic variants. The most affordable Scorpio N 4WD variant is the Z4 diesel-manual, costing Rs. 18.02 lakh (ex-showroom).
As you can see, the Scorpio N's variant, powertrain and drivetrain options tilt much more heavily in diesel engines' favour. Considering the body-on-frame construction and a heavy curb weight, in an SUV like Scorpio N, diesel engines will almost always offer far better mileage than a petrol engine with comparable performance figures.
The following table presents the full ex-showroom price list of all Mahindra Scorpio N variant-powertrain-drivetrain combinations:
With a 2WD manual transmission, the Mahindra Scorpio N diesel variants cost between Rs. 27,000 and Rs. 1.10 lakh more than the comparable petrol manual variants. With the automatic transmission, the Scorpio N diesel variants are Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 94,000 pricier than the comparable petrol automatic trims.
This shows a significant variation in the premium you're paying for the higher efficiency of Scorpio N diesel. If your driving requirements are suitable for a petrol as well as a diesel engine, then this price difference is also something to consider before making the final choice. A smaller price difference would mean that you recover the higher price paid for the diesel engine much sooner than with a variant where you are paying a larger premium for the diesel engine.
The following table presents the petrol versus diesel ex-showroom price comparison of the Mahindra Scorpio N 2WD variants:
The Scorpio N has two engine options, and they are both turbocharged. The 2.0 L turbo petrol engine makes 203PS of power and 370Nm of torque. With the automatic transmission, the power output remains identical, but the torque output goes up by 10Nm.
The 2.2L turbo diesel engine is available in 2 states of tune — one with 132PS of power and the other making 175PS of power. The 132 PS diesel engine is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission and in the lower two variants (Z2 and Z4). It makes 300Nm of torque between 1600 and 2800rpm. The more powerful version of this engine churns out 370Nm of torque with the 6-speed manual transmission and 400Nm with the 6-speed torque converter automatic.
If you are buying the Z4 4WD diesel-manual or 2WD diesel-automatic, then you get the more powerful version of the diesel engine.
