Volkswagen To Discontinue Polo After Legend Edition Sells Out | V3Cars

Volkswagen will soon discontinue the Polo hatchback in India. To bid farewell to the car, Volkswagen India recently launched a special edition of it, called the Legend Edition. The VW Polo Legend Edition is priced at Rs. 10.25 lakh. After the Polo Legend Edition is sold out, Volkswagen will officially end production of the Vento and the Polo and you will not be able to buy a new Polo in India after that.

Volkswagen have not planned any replacement for the Polo for the Indian market as of yet. The 6th gen Polo sold abroad does not fulfil India’s sub-4 metre rule for excise duty benefits. Hence, it will not make its way to our shores. However, we can expect VW India to launch the new Polo GTI in limited numbers via the completely built unit (CBU) route.

Volkswagen aim to launch products tailored to Indian car buyers’ needs and have developed a heavily localised version of the MQB A0 platform, called the MQB A0 IN. Currently, the MQB A0 IN platform underpins the Taigun compact SUV. Even the upcoming Virtus, which will replace the Vento sedan, is based on this platform. Earlier this month, VW began production of the Virtus, ahead of its launch in May 2022. Volkswagen also plan to introduce an all-new, sub-4 metre SUV based on this platform as part of its ‘India 2.5’ growth plan.

While the 6th gen Polo will not make it to India, we can expect Volkswagen to introduce the 7th gen Polo after its international launch. VW will likely modify the 7th gen Polo to help it measure under 4 metres and it will use the MQB A0-IN platform to keep costs in check. However, it is a long way around and is highly unlikely to happen before late 2023 or 2024.
