Update (May 27, 2025): Tata Motors recently announced the prices of the Altroz 2025. Here is the one and only ‘variants explained’ article you need to not only find out the features of each variant, but our buying recommendation. Our advice prioritises value for money, feature distribution and ownership experience.
What Are The Pros And Cons Of Tata Altroz Petrol?
The pros or advantages of Tata Altroz petrol are:
- 5-star BNCAP crash test rating for adult safety; not officially confirmed as of May 27, 2025 but you can count on Tata to deliver on this front
- Unbelievably good feature distribution, which prioritises must-have features while leaving good-to-haves for higher variants
- Incredible value for money of higher variants as they justify up to 2x the incremental cost over the base model with their additional features
- Option of a diesel engine makes it the only car in its class with this powertrain option
- Choice of 2 automatic transmissions with petrol engine: the refined DCT or the affordable AMT
- CNG powertrain offers a usable boot space along with better bottom-end torque than rivals
- 1.2L normal petrol engine offers peak torque at a fairly low 3250rpm for easy drivability in the city
- Diesel engine offers the usual high torque at barely crawling 1250rpm and stays strong till 3000rpm
- Good fuel efficiency of 23.60kmpl with the diesel engine
- Diesel engine justifies 96% of the incremental cost over petrol (Rs. 1.30 lakh) with better performance and fuel efficiency
The Tata Altroz petrol has the following shortcomings or problems:
- Diesel not available in Creative variant
- Some missing features such as split-folding rear seats and telescopic steering
- Even with a usable boot space, the CNG powertrain manages to justify only about 63-74% of the incremental cost over the petrol variants after factoring in the lower performance and fuel cost savings
- Dual-clutch automatics have a poor track record of long-term reliability in Indian driving and traffic conditions; moreover, the fact that this is coming from Tata should make it a risky option if you are buying long-term ownership
- A 6-month interval for service centre visits is too short for keeping the warranty intact; 1 year is the industry standard
- The turbo petrol engine has the lowest power and torque output compared to its rivals: Not applicable as turbo is discontinued with May 2025 update
- Lower variants get skinny 165-section tyres with 14-inch wheels, even with the XT turbo variant; Addressed with May 2025 update
- Automatic transmission not available with the turbo petrol engine; Not applicable after May 2025 update
- Long and confusing variant lineup (including dark variants) makes it difficult to pick a variant; Addressed with May 2025 update
- Stripped down base XE and XE Plus variants miss out on several must-have features; Addressed with May 2025 update; Pure variant is quite well loaded with several must-have features
What Is The Price Of Tata Altroz Petrol Variants?
The 2025 Tata Altroz petrol is available with 5 engine-transmission combinations:
- 1.2L normal petrol with 5-speed manual transmission
- 1.2L normal petrol with 5-speed AMT automatic transmission
- 1.2L normal petrol with 6-speed DCT automatic transmission
- 1.2L normal CNG with 5-speed manual transmission
- 1.2L turbo diesel with 5-speed manual transmission
The normal petrol-manual powertrain is available in all but the top variant with prices ranging from Rs. 6.89 lakh to Rs. 9.99 lakh. The same engine with an AMT automatic costs Rs. 60,000 more and is available in 4 mid-spec variants with prices starting from Rs. 8.29 lakh and going up to Rs. 9.65 lakh (ex-showroom). There’s also a DCT automatic transmission with this engine costing Rs. 1.25 lakh more than the manual. This is only available in the top 3 variants costing Rs. 10.30 lakh to Rs. 11.49 lakh.
The Altroz 2025 with CNG-bi-fuel and manual transmission is available in all of the same variants as the petrol-manual powertrain. It costs between Rs. 7.89 lakh and Rs. 11.09 lakh. These prices are Rs. 94,000 to Rs. 1.10 lakh more than the comparable petrol-manual variants. The Altroz diesel is available in only 3 variants costing Rs. 8.99 lakh to Rs. 11.29 lakh. They are Rs. 1.30 lakh pricier than the petrol-manual variants.

Tata Altroz Smart — Base Model Features & Review
The base Smart variant of the Tata Altroz is only available with the 1.2L normal petrol-manual and 1.2L CNG-manual powertrain options with a price tag of Rs. 6.89 lakh and Rs. 7.89 lakh, respectively.

The Altroz base model gets the following standard features:

The base variant is missing a few must-have features like:
- Music system
- Steering-mounted controls
- Day/night inside mirror
- Wheel covers
- Rear parcel tray
- TPMS
- Height-adjustable driver seat
The base variant seems to offer some useful features such as 6 airbags, power mirrors, large, 16-inch wheels and projector headlamps, all power windows and remote central locking. However, the upgrade to the Pure variant is more than worth it for all Altroz buyers.
Tata Altroz Smart vs Pure Variant — Price, Feature Comparison
The Altroz Pure variant is available with petrol-manual, petrol-AMT automatic, CNG-manual and diesel-manual powertrains. It costs Rs. 80,000 - 90,000 more than the lower Smart variant with comparable powertrain option.
You also have the option of buying this variant with a sunroof in Pure S variant, which costs Rs. 36,000. Although, this isn’t available with the diesel powertrain.

In the Pure variant, you may miss the following features:
- Rear parcel tray
- TPMS
- Front armrest
- Rear armrest
- Split-folding rear seatbacks
The Pure and Pure S variants offer a lot more functional and other must-have features such as wheel covers, day/night inside mirror, touchscreen, cruise control, height-adjustable driver seat and steering-mounted controls. Thankfully, you can easily install 2 of the important missing features of this variant — parcel tray and TPMS. Even the front armrest is not very difficult to get post purchase since it’s available in the higher variants.
On the value front, it is far superior than the base model. So, this is the most affordable Altroz variant we can safely recommend to buyers who don’t want to stretch their budget any further. Among these, you can choose the one with a sunroof or without depending on your preference.
Tata Altroz Pure vs Creative Variant — Price, Feature Comparison
The Altroz Creative variant also gets the same powertrain options as the Pure. This variant is exactly Rs. 1.0 lakh more expensive than the lower Pure variant.
Just like the Pure S, the Creative also gets an S variant costing Rs. 20,000 - 36,000 more. However, this variant is available with all 5 powertrain options. While the AMT automatic costs Rs. 60,000 over the manual, the DCT is Rs. 1.25 lakh pricier.

The Accomplished S variant is pretty well loaded and if we were to nitpick, we’d only say that it misses out on:
- Split-folding rear seatbacks
- Front parking sensors
- Telescopic steering
These are features not available in any variant of the Altroz 2025.
Tata Altroz Accomplished S vs Accomplished Plus S Variant — Price, Feature Comparison
Finally, we land on the Accomplished Plus S. This variant is only available with the DCT-automatic powertrain and costs Rs. 11.49 lakh, which is Rs. 25,000 pricier than the lower variant.

Which Variant Of The 2025 Tata Altroz Petrol Should You Buy?
The Altroz 2025 has an outstanding feature distribution. We have seen significant improvements in Tata products lately, but this is nothing like we have seen before from Tata. They made our job a lot easier.
For the petrol-manual buyers, the base model is not worth buying since the next Pure and Pure S variants offer far better value for money and a bunch of must-have features. Just pick one of them based on your preference for sunroof. The jump to Creative may come across as a little expensive from Pure, but from the base model, it’s still completely justified. In fact, the well-rounded feature package of the Creative makes it our top recommendation. You can buy it with the sunroof if that’s your thing. The upgrade to Accomplished S is also well priced but it doesn’t seem to offer enough must-have features to earn our top recommendation.
For the petrol-AMT automatic buyers also, the Pure and Pure S are both fantastic options. However, if you don’t mind spending a bit more, then the Creative or Creative S are solid options; worthy of our top recommendation.
If you want the Altroz with the DCT, then the things shuffle a bit. First of all, it’s only available in the top 3 variants. Secondly, they all cost over 10 lakh ex-showroom. If the registration cost in your state doesn’t drastically increase for cars over 10 lakh, then the Creative S is the best option. If the prices do go up, then we’ll suggest you either settle for the Creative S AMT or stretch a bit for the Accomplished S. Both of these options will give you an ownership experience suited to the price you’re paying.

For buyers interested in a powertrain with low fuel costs, the Altroz CNG and diesel are worth considering. If your state doesn’t have absurd restrictions on the age of diesel vehicles, then the Altroz diesel deserves your serious consideration.
Once we factored in the boot space, power, torque and fuel cost (50,000km) differences of Altroz CNG and Altroz diesel, the diesel managed to justify 96% of the Rs. 1.30 lakh incremental cost over the petrol-manual. For the CNG powertrain, the lower fuel costs weren’t enough to cover for the drop in power, torque and boot space. In our analysis, it only justifies about Rs. 70,000 cost over the petrol-manual powertrain. In fact, in most variants, the cost of buying the diesel over CNG is only Rs. 20,000. For the significant performance boost and larger boot space, this is a negligible premium to pay. Not to mention, you have to make fewer trips to the fuel station with a diesel car.
However, if you absolutely want a CNG powertrain, then the Creative S is our top recommendation, which is only Rs. 94,000 pricier than the comparable petrol-manual variant. For budget-conscious buyers, the Pure or Pure S are far better options than the Smart base model.
For diesel buyers, the Pure variant is our top recommendation while Accomplished S is worth buying if you find the Pure too basic for your taste and don’t mind stretching your budget. You should buy the Creative S only if the on-road price doesn’t drastically increase for cars over 10 lakh ex-showroom. We wish the Altroz had the option of Creative diesel, which at Rs. 9.99 lakh would have earned our top recommendation with much ease.
What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Tata Altroz?
Among B2 hatchbacks with a normal petrol engine, the power and torque output of the Altroz are on par with the rivals. However, there are 2 good things to note here:
- The Altroz has its torque peaking at a low, 3250rpm
- The Altroz gives you the option of an affordable AMT automatic as well as a more refined DCT automatic while the rivals make that choice for you
On the negative side, it’s the only one with a 3-cylinder engine. Meanwhile, its fuel efficiency figures are respectable but not phenomenal like those of the Japanese twins.

Now we move to the CNG powertrain comparison and the i20 has tapped out. Here too, the Altroz has higher torque output peaking much sooner than Baleno/Glanza. On the fuel efficiency side, the Japs are about 10% better than the Altroz CNG. Since they have a smaller CNG capacity, the refill interval will remain similar for all three cars.

Finally, we have the diesel powertrain and by this time, even the Japanese have given up. So, the Altroz is the default choice for any diesel hatchback buyer. This is where the balance of performance and efficiency shines as the Altroz has 200Nm of torque peaking at lowly 1250rpm and staying strong till 3000rpm. And even with this performance, it manages to promise a mileage figure of 23.6kmpl.
