The Hyundai Bayon HX8 CVT is our top-recommended Bayon automatic variant. Here, we compare it with the Renault Duster Evolution Strong Hybrid CAT, the most affordable Duster hybrid. Both fit an ex-showroom budget of around Rs. 17 lakh. The Bayon offers more comfort and parking equipment, while the Duster combines higher system power with substantially better claimed mileage. Is the Renault’s hybrid powertrain worth giving up some of the Hyundai’s features?

The Hyundai Bayon and Renault Duster offer different reasons to spend around Rs. 17 lakh. The HX8 CVT puts more equipment within reach, particularly for seating comfort and parking assistance. The Evolution gives buyers access to the Duster’s strong hybrid powertrain without stretching to its higher hybrid variants.
Their ex-showroom prices compare as follows:
*Both prices are introductory. The Duster’s introductory prices apply to vehicles delivered by December 31, 2026.
The Evolution’s position as the entry-level Duster hybrid does not leave it short of everyday conveniences. Wireless charging, cruise control and an electric parking brake with auto hold are available in both variants.
The following table groups their common equipment:
The Bayon’s additional equipment focuses on seat comfort and parking assistance. The Duster counters with dual-zone AC, a larger instrument display and a few additional cabin conveniences.
These are the key equipment differences:
The Bayon’s ventilated front seats can make hot-weather journeys more comfortable. Its powered driver seat and reclining rear seatback provide more adjustment, while the rear armrest adds another convenience for passengers. The 360-degree camera and front and side parking sensors also provide more assistance when manoeuvring in tight spaces.
The Duster’s dual-zone AC lets the driver and front passenger select different temperatures. Its larger instrument display, cooled storage compartment and one-touch operation for all windows are useful everyday advantages.
The Duster hybrid uses a multi-mode automatic gearbox, which we call a Combined Automatic Transmission (CAT). It uses 4 petrol-engine gears and 2 electric-motor gears to drive the wheels using petrol power, electric power or both. The system selects the appropriate drive combination automatically, so the driver operates it like a conventional automatic.
Their powertrain specifications and claimed mileage figures compare below:
The Duster’s higher combined power output should give it an advantage when overtaking or driving with passengers and luggage. Its electric motor handles pulling away from a standstill and can assist the petrol engine during acceleration, making the hybrid system useful in stop-start traffic as well.
The Renault therefore offers both greater performance potential and lower claimed fuel consumption for its premium.
Using their claimed mileage figures, the Duster would consume approximately 36% less petrol over the same distance. That makes fuel savings a significant consideration, particularly for buyers who drive regularly.
Delhi’s petrol price is Rs. 102.12/litre as of writing this comparison. Using this price gives the following monthly fuel expenses:
Costs and savings are rounded independently to the nearest rupee. These calculations use claimed mileage; actual expenses depend on the mileage achieved.
At 1500km per month, the Duster’s theoretical petrol saving works out to approximately Rs. 35,400 a year. At these claimed figures, fuel savings alone would offset its Rs. 45,100 ex-showroom premium after approximately 22,900km.
The Duster is longer and taller, but exterior dimensions do not tell the whole story about passenger comfort. Despite its shorter wheelbase, the Bayon feels more spacious in terms of rear legroom. The Duster’s rear seat offers better support.
The following table compares their dimensions, luggage capacity and tyres:
#Hyundai claim a 505L boot capacity for the Bayon with no spare tyre fitted. The HX8 CVT comes with a spare tyre, and Hyundai have not published its boot capacity separately.
The Bayon’s spare tyre provides an alternative when tyre damage cannot be sealed with a repair kit. The Duster’s standard kit can help with some tread punctures, but it cannot repair sidewall cuts or major tyre damage.
The Duster’s published 5-star Bharat NCAP rating covers the petrol variants listed in its fact sheet. The 1.8L strong hybrid is not included in that applicability list. Hyundai describe the Bayon as engineered for 5-star Indian safety standards.
Their standard warranty terms compare as follows:
Renault also offer additional coverage under the Renault Forever programme, extending up to 7 years or 1,50,000km, subject to its servicing and eligibility conditions. After the standard warranty, qualifying annual services activate additional cover for 1 year or 10,000km at a time. The hybrid battery has a separate warranty of 8 years or 1,60,000km, whichever comes first.
The Hyundai Bayon HX8 CVT is the better fit if seating comfort, ease of manoeuvring and rear legroom are your priorities. Our top-recommended Bayon automatic costs Rs. 45,100 less and includes ventilated front seats, an 8-way powered driver seat, a reclining rear seatback and a panoramic sunroof. Its 360-degree camera, front and side parking sensors, factory-fitted dashcam and spare tyre further strengthen its appeal.
Choose the Renault Duster Evolution Strong Hybrid CAT if higher system power and lower fuel expenses matter more. Its premium brings 45PS more maximum output and a substantial claimed mileage advantage, with theoretical fuel savings offsetting the ex-showroom price difference after around 22,900km. Dual-zone AC and the more supportive rear seat are additional advantages. For buyers with regular, substantial driving, the Duster’s hybrid powertrain gives a convincing reason to accept its shorter equipment list.
