Baojun Yep Exterior Design

The design patent filed by MG Motor India doesn’t carry any change over the Chinese model. The Baojun Yep comes with a butch SUV design packed in a small form factor. It gets a high-set bonnet and an upright front windscreen. At the front, it offers an enclosed front grille and flush-fitting rectangular LED headlights with integrated DRLs.

In terms of dimensions, the Yep measures 3381mm in length, 1685mm in width, 1721mm in height and boasts a wheelbase of 2110mm. For a beefier stance, the Yep offers 195/60 R15 tyres that are a lot larger than the 12-inch wheels of the Comet EV.

The highlight of the Baojun Yep is its rear profile, which boasts an optional LCD screen. Baojun like to call this feature a ‘car-watch’ and the LCD screen can be customised via a mobile app to show various graphics including a watch. It remains to be seen whether this car-watch feature will make its way to the India-spec model or not.

Baojun Yep Interior And Features

On the inside, the Baojun Yep offers a very modern dashboard along with a connected screen setup. The same setup is also seen on the MG Comet EV, featuring twin 10.25-inch screens. Furthermore, the Yep offers horizontal AC vents, a multi-function steering wheel and a rotary drive mode selector. Like the Comet EV, the Yep also offers a 2-door layout with seating for up to 4 passengers. On the feature front, the Yep small electric SUV offers automatic headlights, power-adjustable driver and co-driver seat, keyless entry, 360-degree parking camera and a full load of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Baojun Yep Powertrain Details

The Baojun Yep comes with a 28.1kWh battery pack that channels power to a rear-mounted electric motor. The electric motor offers 68PS of power and 140Nm of torque. It offers a CLTC-claimed range of 303km while the Comet EV offers a WLTP-claimed range of 230km. The Baojun Yep can charge its battery from 30-80% in 35 minutes via a DC fast charger. A regular AC charger, on the other hand, will take over 8.5 hours to charge the battery from 20-100%. In comparison to the Comet EV, the Yep offers a larger battery pack and also adds the convenience of DC fast charging.

Baojun Yep Launch Details

MG Motor India are likely to launch the rebadged version of the Baojun Yep in 2024. It will sit above the Comet EV but share a similar footprint as the Comet EV small electric intercity commuter. Its butch SUV stance could carve out a whole new small electric SUV segment in the country. Once launched, the Yep EV will rival the Tata Tiago EV, Tata Tigor EV and Citroen eC3.
