Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Teaser Kills Hopes Of Seeing Jimny | V3Cars

A few days ago, Maruti Suzuki Nexa shared a teaser with the hashtag ‘SUVForAdventure’. This led to the auto enthusiasts speculating that Jimny might launch soon. Later they revealed that it was a teaser for their crossover, the S-Cross.

Maruti Jimny

Maruti Suzuki first showcased the Jimny at Auto Expo 2020. However, Maruti Suzuki has not given any information regarding its launch in India since the showcase. They said that they are still assessing the Indian market. Suzuki manufactures the Jimny in India, but only for exports.

Suzuki sells the Jimny as a 3-door SUV in the international market. We may get the 5-door version in India for added practicality even if it exceeds the 4m mark. The 5-door version will also need to offer a slightly longer wheelbase. Suzuki Jimny is the latest generation of the Maruti Gypsy, which was a popular SUV in India. It remained on sale for about 3 decades, although it was mostly available only to military and paramilitary wings.

If Maruti Suzuki bring the Jimny to India in the near future, then it is likely to get the 1.5L hybrid petrol engine. However, for off-road driving, a turbocharged petrol or diesel engine seem more suitable for their better bottom and mid-range RPMs. Maruti Suzuki have neither in their portfolio right now. Meanwhile, the Mahindra Thar has the option of a turbo petrol and a turbo diesel engine. Still, the demand for the diesel Thar overshadows the petrol’s by 3-1.

With the 1.5L petrol engine, not only will the Jimny still lack the bottom-end torque, which a turbo petrol and turbo diesel engine offers but it’ll also push the price higher. Because of the larger displacement engine, the Jimny will not be able to completely qualify for the small car tax benefits. This will mean less competitive pricing, which will result in less than ideal demand and thus a possibly failed product and brand in Maruti’s hands.

If you are planning to buy an off-road SUV, then you can consider the Mahindra Thar or the Force Gurkha. The Thar has very long waiting periods, so if you’re in a rush, then the Gurkha can be a better option.
