Published : 01 December 2024

Read Time : 5 min

For any vehicle to be road-legal in India, it must be registered and have a license plate prominently displayed per the RTO rules. Each car gets a unique registration number sequence, which starts with a code suggesting the state in which it has been registered. For example, for all vehicles registered in Maharashtra state, the registration number will start with MH. Similarly, the registration number will start with KL for all vehicles registered in Kerala.

What is the Regional Transport Office (RTO)?

Section 213(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 established the Department of Motor Vehicles, which is governed by a central law applicable across the country. The department is responsible for enforcing the provisions of the Act and is headed by the Commissioner of Transportation.

The Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 stipulates that each state and city should have its own RTO (Regional Transportation Office), which is responsible for carrying out specific functions and activities. Each RTO is mandated to enforce the provisions of the Act within its jurisdiction.

Q.  What are the duties of the RTO?

A. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) is a government body responsible for vehicle registrations, issuing driving licences, vehicle fitness certification, and road tax collection.
