Let’s first look at the prices of both the cars for the petrol-manual powertrain.
With the petrol-manual powertrain, the Maruti Suzuki Alto’s prices start at Rs. 3.39 lakh and top out at Rs. 4.41 lakh. The Renault Kwid’s petrol-manual range costs between Rs. 4.7 lakh and Rs. 5.61 lakh.
Maruti does not offer the Alto with a petrol-automatic powertrain. The Kwid’s 2 petrol-automatic variants cost between Rs. 5.86 lakh and Rs. 5.99 lakh.

The 1 CNG-manual variant of the Maruti Suzuki Alto costs Rs. 5.03 lakh. The Renault Kwid is not available with a CNG-manual powertrain.
The Alto and the Kwid are not available with CNG-automatic powertrains.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto and the Renault Kwid are both hatchbacks. The Alto is 3445mm long, 1515mm wide and 1475mm tall. The Alto’s wheelbase is 2360mm long. The Kwid measures 3731mm long, 1579mm wide and 1490mm tall and has a wheelbase measuring 2422mm. In terms of dimensions, the Maruti Suzuki Alto is significantly smaller than the Renault Kwid. So, the Kwid will offer a stronger road presence than the Alto.
The Alto has a ground clearance of 160mm while the Kwid has a ground clearance of 184mm. The 177-litre boot space of the Alto is 102 litres smaller than that of the Kwid.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto is available with a 0.8L normal petrol engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. This engine makes 48PS of power at 6000rpm and 69Nm of torque at 3500rpm.
The Renault Kwid is available with 2 petrol engines - a 0.8L normal petrol and a 1.0L normal petrol engine. The 0.8L normal petrol engine gets a 5-speed manual while the 1.0L normal petrol engine is available with a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT automatic transmission.
The 0.8L normal petrol engine of the Kwid makes 54PS of power at 5600rpm and 72Nm of torque at 4250rpm. The 1.0L normal petrol engine in the Renault Kwid pushes out 68PS of power at 5500rpm and 91Nm of torque at 4250rpm.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto is also available with a 0.8L normal CNG engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. This engine makes 41PS of power at 6000rpm and 60Nm of torque at 3500rpm.
