Toyota have trademarked the Hyryder name in India. New reports suggest that the Japanese carmaker has registered the name Hyryder for its upcoming hybrid C-SUV. It is a well-known fact that Toyota and Maruti Suzuki joined hands to develop a new C-segment SUV. The upcoming compact SUV from both carmakers will feature a strong hybrid setup and rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

The ‘Hy’ prefix in the name could signify the new SUV’s hybrid powertrain. This could also mean that the new SUV could get a petrol-hybrid powertrain as standard. Recently, Toyota also trademarked the ‘Hycross’.
As Maruti are planning to discontinue the S-Cross, they will be left with no car in the C-SUV segment. Internally codenamed YGF, the new SUV is likely to replace the S-Cross in the coming weeks. Both Toyota and Maruti will have their iterations of this SUV featuring the same powertrain but different styling.
The new SUVs from Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are expected to carry a long list of features. The Toyota Hyryder is expected to feature a 360-degree camera setup, 6 airbags, connected car technology, panoramic sunroof, full-colour TFT instrument cluster, ventilated front seats and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), among others.

Reports suggest that the new SUV will use a heavily modified version of Toyota’s TNGA-B platform and will be manufactured at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Bengaluru. This is opposite to the usual case, where Maruti manufacture the cars, such as the Baleno and Vitara Brezza, and Toyota rebadge them.

The new SUV is also rumoured to feature a self-charging hybrid setup. This will help the new SUVs deliver segment-best mileage figures. Toyota recently invested a hefty sum of money in the localisation of electronic components in India. Reports suggest that the new SUV will use the same powertrain as the Yaris Cross sold abroad. The Yaris Cross uses a 1.5L normal petrol engine with a 59kW motor.
New reports on the internet suggest that Toyota's version of the SUV will arrive in the market this July or August. Maruti’s version will follow later and is likely to go on sale this Diwali. We will keep you updated about these SUVs as more information comes out.
